These common external factors can cause anxiety:

  • Stress at work.
  • Stress from school.
  • Stress in a personal relationship such as marriage.
  • Financial stress.
  • Stress from an emotional trauma such as the death of a loved one.
  • Stress from a serious medical illness.
  • Side effect of medication.
  • Use of an illicit drug, such as cocaine.
  • Causes

    • Heart disease.
    • Diabetes.
    • Thyroid problems, such as hyperthyroidism.
    • Respiratory disorders, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma.
    • Drug misuse or withdrawal.
    • Withdrawal from alcohol, anti-anxiety medications (benzodiazepines) or other medications.
    • Chronic pain or irritable bowel syndrome.
