Sen. Lee Reintroduces Global Trade Accountability Act
WASHINGTON - Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) introduced the Global Trade Accountability Act Thursday, a bill that would subject unilateral actions by the president to increase trade barriers to congressional approval.
“Congress has ceded far too much law making power to the Executive branch, including the power to unilaterally raise tariffs,” Lee said. “Sudden hikes in trade barriers could wreak havoc on many small and midsize manufacturers in my home state of Utah that rely on imports and globally connected supply chains. Congress must be involved in any decision that would increase barriers to trade.”
The Global Trade Accountability Act would require both chambers of Congress to affirmatively approve of any “unilateral trade actions” by the president before they could take effect. The bill would only cover unilateral trade actions by the President to increase trade barriers. “Unilateral trade actions” in this legislation are defined as any increases in tariffs or duties, tightening of tariff-rate quotas or quantitative restrictions on imports, and other restrictions or prohibitions on imports.

UPDATE: Air Force Deems Hill Safe
“When compared to other bases around the world, Hill shines.”
WASHINGTON – The Air Force Secretary has produced supplemental findings after conducting a study to determine the bases most at risk of weather impacts. The “Top 10” list is comprised of Air Force bases deemed “susceptible to the consequences of severe weather events.” As Utah’s sole representation on an Armed Services committee, Rep. Rob Bishop UT-01 received a background paper detailing the list seen below.
After receiving this background paper from the Secretary of the Air Force, Rep. Bishop issued the following statement:
“It is always heartening to get a reminder that Utah’s Hill Air Force Base is strong. We have always known that Hill’s active duty and civilian workforce is strong. Now we can take comfort knowing the Air Force acknowledges the resiliency and strength of the base itself. When compared to other bases around the world, Hill shines.”
BACKGROUND: In January of 2019, a preliminary study seemed to place HAFB high on a list of vulnerable military installations. That study omitted from consideration over 80% of US Air Force Bases. This most recent study released by the Secretary of the Air Force evaluates a more complete listing of Air Force installations. Additional service-specific evaluations have been requested and are expected

The awards program is sponsored by the Daniels Fund, the Daniels Fund Ethics Initiative at the David Eccles School of Business, the Community Foundation of Utah, Utah Business Magazine, and the Kem C. Gardner Policy Institute at the University of Utah.
Governor Gary Herbert says: “The Utah Ethical Leadership Awards recognize Utah businesses, nonprofit organizations, and government entities that embody best practices in ethical behaviors. The finalists and awardees are a great representation of Utah’s principle-based ethical leadership.”
Finalists will be announced after a thorough evaluation process and will be notified the beginning of August. All finalists will then be invited to an awards breakfast on September 6th, where the winners will be announced. One award will be given to the winner of each category and all finalists and awardees will receive extensive press coverage in Utah Business Magazine and other media outlets.
Dr. Taylor Randall, Dean of the University of Utah’s David Eccles School of Business, said: “The David Eccles School of Business is dedicated to making sure our students not only get an elite business education, but also learn how to better themselves, their workplaces and the world around them through leading an ethical professional life. The Utah Ethical Leadership Awards are an outstanding forum to showcase for students and Utahans in general, the local businesses that make ethical standards a priority. The awards will serve as inspiration for years to come for the future business leaders coming out of the David Eccles School of Business.”
Alex Eaton, Chief Executive Officer of the Community Foundation of Utah, says: “We look forward to receiving applications for the Utah Ethical Leadership Awards.
