Love Utah Give Tuesday Programming Redirected to Sustainable Funding for Nonprofits

Love Utah Give Tuesday will be discontinued to shift resources to grow long-term funding for community organizations.

Over the past five years, Love Utah Give Tuesday (formerly Love Utah Give Utah) has been hosted by the Community Foundation of Utah (CFU). The online giving day was established in 2013 to capitalize on a form of crowdfunding to increase donations for Utah nonprofits. Since the program’s establishment, over $5 million has been deployed into Utah’s social sector to help nonprofits continue their incredible work.

CFU’s intent for this giving day was to use our resources and convening role to encourage donations for more operating support for Utah nonprofits. Whilst enthusiasm remains for giving days in general, we have received feedback that this program creates significant work, and that there are concerns around timing, fees, capacity, and redundancy. In keeping with CFU’s commitment to embrace innovation and eliminate redundancy, we believe Love Utah Give Tuesday is no longer the best way we can support our nonprofit community.

We often ask our team: “How can we best leverage our resources to support our community?” We feel strongly that the answer lies in supporting long-term funding for our nonprofit partners. We also believe that we are uniquely positioned to help grow long-term funding, so we are redirecting our resources to support this goal through working to grow Agency Endowment Funds coupled with our ability to manage gifts of complex assets.

Agency Endowments allow nonprofit organizations to grow invested principal over the long-term, providing a steady, predictable stream of funding—and a commitment to the organization's future. CFU has the expertise to manage Agency Endowments and monetize complex assets (like highly-appreciated private and public stock, real estate, and LLC interest) on behalf of fellow nonprofits and donors to invest in the future of the nonprofit sector. Focusing on endowed gifts (as opposed to small, one-time donations) will allow us to make a bigger difference for nonprofits over the long-term, and monetizing complex assets allows more philanthropic dollars to make their way into the sector. Further, we can help donors monetize complex assets for their favorite nonprofit, even if the organization doesn’t have an endowment.

We understand change is never easy, but we are excited for this shift toward helping nonprofits in perpetuity. We would love to speak to staff, boards, and donors about how to build and use CFU to create lasting sources of support and look forward to continuing our educational and financial investments in Utah’s social sector. If you'd like to explore endowed funding or our ability to accept complex assets, please email donor@utahcf.org.

All our best,
Community Foundation of Utah

All About Unified Sports®

Unified Sports® joins people with and without intellectual disabilities on the same team.

Inspired by the simple principle that training and playing together is a quick path to friendship and understanding, Unified Sports® began in 1988 as an initiative to bring to bring together athletes of all abilities. Having sport in common is just one more way that preconceptions and false ideas are swept away. Young people with disabilities do not often get a chance to play on their school sports teams, and Unified Sports® is designed to change this by creating inclusive sport experiences for all.

Today, the Unified Sports® program reaches over 5.3 million athletes and Unified Sports teammates globally. Learn more about the Unified Sports® program and how it's impact has led the Revolution of Inclusion around the world.

Building an Inclusive World

Focus: Unified Sports® in Utah

In 2012, as part of an effort to reach school-aged athletes, Special Olympics Utah formed a partnership with the Utah High School Activities Association (UHSAA) to bring Unified Sports® to Utah’s high schools to provide member schools the opportunity to participate in interscholastic co-ed Unified Sports Soccer and Track & Field.

The Unified Sports program aligns well with UHSAA’s mission which stresses educational and cultural values, improving participation in sports and fine arts, promoting life skills and teaching lessons through competitive activities where students can learn to have mutual respect and good sportsmanship.

"My experiences with Unified Sports motivated me to run for student body president of my high school on the platform of more inclusive opportunities for those with disabilities. I am grateful I had the opportunity to serve as Student Body President, and very proud of my fellow classmates for taking up the call for more inclusive activities.” - Boston Iocabazzi, former High School Student Body President and football player, and now a University student

The Unified Effect: Same Opportunities as her Peers

By Chelsea, mother of Addie

My daughter and I have shed thousands of tears and spent countless sleepless nights wondering how someone who does not have a filter or understand social etiquette can make friends, have a peer group, and be included.

At this age it’s hard enough for any teenager to make friends and fit in. When you add a disability into the mix it becomes even harder.

Unified Sports has created more days where my daughter does not fight anxiety and depression. Through Unified Sports she is seen and has a voice!

Because of Unified Sports my daughter has the same opportunities as her peers, and the focus is on inclusion! I encourage every school to have Unified Sports.

Photos, top to bottom: Receiving the Unified Coach of the Year Award during the 2017 Summer Games; Having fun in the RSL Unified locker room; Providing sideline assistance during a rainy RSL Unified game; Enjoying a Utah Royals FC game with her daughter Madi.

Jenna Holland has been leading the way as a volunteer coach for Special Olympics Utah for over 15 years.  She has played soccer her entire life and dedicated hours to learning the skills of coaching soccer.

In 2016, SO Utah started a partnership with Real Salt Lake to create an RSL SO Utah Unified Soccer Team. The athletes and sports partners were selected in tryouts and Jenna was selected as Head Coach of the RSL SO Utah Unified Soccer Team due to her years of experience with SO Utah and her soccer coaching skills.

Jenna takes her responsibilities of being a coach seriously because she wants to give players—both athletes and unified partners—a chance to become better players and individuals. She challenges the players to: “ Give your best, be your best and become messengers for acceptance and inclusion for individuals with intellectual disabilities.”

In 2017, Coach Jenna received the Unified Coach of the Year Award for 2016 from Special Olympics Utah for her dedication to coaching and development of programs that advance inclusion of those with intellectual disabilities.

Along with her assistant coaches and the support of the RSL Foundation, Coach Jenna has built a quality RSL SO Utah Unified Soccer program.  In recognition of her great coaching skills the RSL Foundation nominated Coach Jenna to be the head coach of the West Coast Unified Team for the 2018 MLS ALL STAR Weekend, East vs. West. Unified Game.

"Being a Unified Coach at the 2018 MLS All Star Week was an amazing experience and honor. My whole life I have loved soccer, and here I was spending a week with everyone who loves soccer, and coaching Special Olympics atheltes and Unfied parnters from the Western United States who love soccer.  I am so grateful to everyone who believed in me.  It is time that will always be near and dear to my heart."  Coach Jenna Holland

Thanks Coach Jenna for believing in, and advancing Unified Sports!

Unified Partners in Basketball:

Larry H Miller Charities, the Utah Jazz and

Special Olympics Utah

With the generous support of Larry H Miller Charities and the Utah Jazz, Special Olympics Utah is able to host a separate basketball season and State Basketball Tournament, focus on creating new opportunities for athletes and unified partners to try basketball as a new sport, and create opportunities for skills clinics and camps.

In March, Special Olympics Utah hosted the 2019 State Basketball Tournament that saw over 700 athletes and 200 unified partners compete during two days of competition. In April, the Unified Fit Clinic led by Utah Jazz staff and players from the Utah Stars was held for high school athletes and unified partners. During the clinic, skills, drills, and scrimmages were held, and a fun dance cheer was taught to everyone by the Utah Jazz Dancers.

This partnership assists Special Olympics Utah with its goals to provide athletes with new ways to try basketball, create more Unified basketball teams both in the community and in high schools, and grow participation in basketball overall.

Special Olympics Utah looks forward to the continued partnership with Larry H Miller Charities and the Utah Jazz as basketball continues to grow as a season and unified sport in Utah.

Watch for more to come!
