Dear KidsOutAndAbout readers:

When I was growing up, if asked where we got our food, l would probably have told you that food comes from supermarkets, and if prompted to go back one step further, I would have said Kraft or, even better, Hostess. Only if pressed farther would I have talked about farms.

There's no doubt that the disconnect that has occurred between modern people and our food means we've lost something profound as a culture during the past century. Fortunately, lots of people care about fixing this: What has come to be known as the slow food movement has gained a lot of momentum during the 18 years I've been publishing KidsOutAndAbout.com, as has the farm to table movement. A common thread between them is that food is no longer just stuff, but an experience, and a fun one at that. Being able to connect my kids more to their food's origins by picking our own at local farms and participating in CSAs has led to their increased willingness to try new foods and to cook new dishes. I'm pretty sure they're healthier for it, but it's more than that: The more something becomes an experience, the more connected we are to what we're doing, the more we know, and the more we add to our characters. Engagement removes blind spots we didn't even know we had. And that's what I really want for my kids. Because KidsOutAndAbout is all about helping you introduce kids to the best experiences your community offers, we emphasize farms a lot:

I actually don't begrudge Hostess its prominence in my own diet when I was a kid. But even my junior-high-school self would have agreed: Fun at the farm beats a package of Ding Dongs any day of the week. August is the best time to experience and savor our world's abundance, plus it makes for a great way to create terrific end-of-summer memories. Use the links above to connect your kids to the local food that's just around the corner!
