On the River in New Mexico

by Rosa Brandt

I have cried, cursed at plants, waded through a flooded swamp early in the morning with numb feet, and crawled on my hands and knees through a maze of salt cedar. I have stared in awe as javelinas scatter in the forest ahead of me, felt the thrill of kayaking across the swiftly moving Rio Grande, and noticed the jolt of excitement that comes every time I hear the fitz-bew of a southwestern willow flycatcher answering my recorded call.

August 30, 2019 - Toronto, ON - Selfish Things are gearing up for the release of their debut full-length and two incredible North American tours this fall. But today, the Toronto 4-piece rock band has dropped a visceral music video for brand new single "Blood" featuring Andy Leo of Crown The Empire.

On the track, frontman Alex Biro shares "My grandma was dying. She had a white blood cell count of 40 000 which is (if my memory serves me correctly) 10 times what it should be for a normal person. WZRD BLD and one of our friends KJ had the chorus pretty much set in stone, and the band and I took it from there. Definitely one of my favourite songs on the album, although birthed from a difficult moment in my life."

The accompanying music video, directed by Miguel Barbosa, shows a visual representation of what Biro felt during that time. "Miguel and I work pretty seamlessly together. He gives me space to creative direct all of our videos and really brings my ideas to life alongside Ryan Glover, our cinematographer. Conceptually, I wanted to do something that represented both the madness and desperation of death and illness. I hope that was accomplished." Fans can stream the new music video today at https://smarturl.it/sflogos.

Due out September 20th via Pure Noise Records, Selfish Things' full-length debut Logos is a collection of 11 tracks that dive right into the psyche of Biro. "I want people to know that there is strength in your faults. It's just as important to suffer as it is to find moments of joy and happiness. Darkness and light need one another" shares Biro on the upcoming album.

"Blood" joins previously released singles "Hole", "Pride", "Flood" and "Drained (ft. William Ryan Key)" from the forthcoming album, which was produced entirely by WZRD BLD. Fans can pre-order Logos at https://smarturl.it/sflogos.

While taking their name from Jimmy Eat World's "23", with unmatched determination Selfish Things prove they are neither selfish nor self-serving. Having spent years cultivating and nurturing his raw, natural talent, dedication to musicianship and songwriting, Biro founded Selfish Things. All of this, in the hope of shedding light on one simple, yet oftentimes overlooked, concept - honesty.

Selfish Things is Alex Biro (Vocals/Guitar/Piano), Mike Ticar (Lead Guitar/Vocals), Cam Snooks (Rhythm Guitar) and Jordan Trask (drums).

Hi there,

I wanted to share with you a GoFundMe for the Juyar family who have lost everything due to a fire in their apartment complex in Millcreek.

According to the GoFundMe campaign, Jose missed months of work last year and went through a long recuperation process due to a broken femur. Jose was finally back to work and then tragedy struck again.  Their renters insurance only covers structural damage and so none of their belongings are covered.

The campaign can be found through this link: https://www.gofundme.com/juyar-family-have-lost-everything-in-a-fire

GoFundMe: The Juyar family has lost everything in a fire

https://www.gofundme.com/juyar-family-have-lost-everything-in-a-fire

Campaign description:

The Juyar family has lost everything due to a fire in their apartment complex in Millcreek, Utah. Fortunately Jose, his wife Karen, and their two kids Jean Paul and Carol are fine.  Jose missed months of work last year and went through a long recuperation process due to a broken femur.  He's finally back to work and then tragedy strikes again.  Their renters insurance only covers structural damage caused by them.  None of their belongings are covered.  They have lost everything!  They don't even have a place to live.  The apartment complex is releasing them from their lease and sending them on their way without placing them in another unit or any assistance in finding a new place.

It's hard to estimate how much money is actually needed when you have lost absolutely everything except the clothes on your back.  They are starting from scratch so whatever amount is raised will be very helpful.  They are currently living with a friend but will need to find a new apartment.  They are going to have to buy all new clothes, furniture, electronics, everything.  The sooner we can raise the funds and help get them back on their feet, the better.

In gratitude,

Jenny Perillo
