Green Acres Elementary - Principal’s Message - I want to discuss the engineering part of our STEM emphasis. We are using the Project Lead the Way (PLTW), Launch curriculum to teach the engineering design process. If you refer to the graphic below with the steps in the engineering design process you’ll notice it’s a great process for general decision making. Something I really like is that we’re teaching students to collaborate and share ideas. I love the explain step, we’re doing this in all subjects now. If students can explain their thinking we know they’ve mastered a concept or can identify where they get lost. They also learn to improve on their idea which is what engineers do- invent, innovate and improve products or processes that solve problems or make things better. There are so many engineering fields. We are teaching PLTW modules related to biomedical engineering, computer programming and structural engineering. They are really fun and interesting ways to teach students how to go about solving problems and thinking critically. Lisa Gilstrap
