American, Canadian, and Mexican trade negotiators will soon begin the eighth round of negotiations to hash out a new North American Free Trade Agreement.

Several contentious issues remain unresolved. One of the biggest sticking points is the strength of intellectual property protections, such as patents and copyrights.

The Canadians and Mexicans oppose strong intellectual property rights. They claim that such protections inflate the price of drugs, thereby restricting patients' access to medicines.

President Trump's recent tax overhaul has American CEOs feeling generous. Walmart and American Airlines are among the big companies giving employees bonuses of up to $1,000 each; Lockheed Martin is putting an additional $5 million toward employee pensions, and Cigna is upping its hourly minimum wage to $16.

Some pundits are accusing the energy industry of failure to follow suit. People are asking where the bonus announcements from big oil and gas companies are.

Dear Dave,

I’m about to graduate from college, and while I’ve been in school my mom has been handling most of my finances. Recently, I discovered she’s been taking my student loan money and spending it on herself. So far, it looks like she’s taken around $12,000, and I have a total of $25,000 in student loan debt. Since I realized this was happening, I’ve been reading your books and learning how to manage my own money. I don’t know how to deal with this situation with her, though. She admits she did wrong, but says she can’t pay it back. Can you help?

As a result of experiencing a traumatic event, whether it occurs once or repeatedly, the psyche can become damaged. This damage, known as psychological trauma, may come to light right away or can take as long as several weeks or years.

Florida School Shooting and the Underground World of RAD

There is an underground world of RAD moms and they are more frightened than ever this week. The Reactive Attachment Disorder Facebook groups are lit up with information and worry about the Florida shooter. It's coming up because the shooter was adopted, the police were at his home multiple times as he grew up, and then to top off his trauma, his adoptive parents died. These RAD moms are saying: "This will be my kid someday."  And "This is why my child with RAD needs to be somewhere safe."

Publishing on April 3, 2018 from Jack White's Third Man Books, Destruction of Man is a book-length poem about small scale family farming in the midst of the get-big-or-get-out mantra and foghorn. 

Destruction of Man is a book by a poet-farmer, whose farm is located in Ladysmith, WI, about farming, and family, and stung body, stung land. The conclusions Smith presents are clarion clear: rurality has its music and all we have is love. Following the words of Gertrude Stein: "After all anybody is as their land and air is."
