New bear hunts approved

Wildlife Board approves changes for Utah’s 2019 – 2021 hunting seasons

Salt Lake City -- Starting this season, hunters will have more chances to spot and stalk bears in Utah.

At their meeting on Jan. 10, members of the Utah Wildlife Board—a panel of seven citizens appointed by the governor—approved changes that will guide black bear hunting in Utah for the next three years.

1-13-2019 - How America's new trade deal will save lives

The White House recently finalized the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, a major trade deal that will replace NAFTA.

This pact is great news for patients. It strengthens the economic incentives for American drug companies to develop new cures. Congress can strike a blow against cancer, Alzheimer's, and other deadly diseases by approving the deal.

1-12-2019 - Corn continues to thrive in the swamp

Last month, President Trump directed the Environmental Protection Agency to allow the year-round sale of gasoline that contains 15 percent ethanol, or E15. The decision is a big win for politically connected corn farmers -- and a big loss for American drivers and the environment.

For more than a decade,  the federal government's "Renewable Fuel Standard" has required refineries to blend biofuels into their gasoline. The most popular biofuel by far is ethanol derived from corn. It has accounted for 87 percent of the RFS's blending requirements since 2007.

1-11-2019 - To better treat patients, hospitals should keep the family close

Loneliness is as hazardous to one's health as smoking a pack a day, new research suggests.

Oddly enough, people in the hospital are at particular risk of becoming lonely. Doctors, nurses and support staff may poke and prod them at all hours of the day or night. But they tend to lack interactions with family and friends, especially as the days in the hospital mount.

That could have dire consequences for their recovery. All the good work their clinicians are doing to heal them could be undermined by loneliness.

1-10-2019 - Socialism Destroys Venezuelan Economy, Freshmen Democrats want it Here

Hugo Chavez proclaimed December 6, 1998, when he was elected president of Venezuela, “Venezuela’s resurrection is under way and nothing and nobody can stop it.”  At the time Venezuela had one of the best economies and highest per capita incomes in Latin America.  The lure of socialism, where the government controls and distributes most everything, overwhelmed the country.

Azar's crackdown on foreign freeloading misses the mark

President Trump promised he'd work to reduce prescription drug prices. Thus far, he's been a man of his word.

The president has proposed capping out-of-pocket costs for seniors, offering free generic drugs to certain low-income Medicare beneficiaries, and even targeting middlemen in the drug supply chain that pocket savings instead of passing them onto patients.

In a recent speech, the president took aim at a related problem: ending the "global freeloading" that has forced Americans to subsidize drugs in foreign countries.
