Conventions Mark End of an Era in Utah Elections
Party delegates will no longer have power to choose candidates for all Utah
SALT LAKE CITY – Last Saturday’s Republican and Democratic Party State Conventions marked the end of an era in Utah elections. Thanks to the historic voter participation agreement forged by Count My Vote and Utah legislators, party delegates will no longer exclusively have power to choose candidates - all Utah voters will have a voice in Utah’s next candidate nomination process.
Count My Vote’s landmark election reforms include direct access to the primary election ballot for all qualified candidates, as well as the ability for all voters, including Utah’s 650,000 independent voters, to cast a ballot for their favorite candidate in any party’s primary election. Utah’s first direct, open primary will take place in June, 2016.
Utah election reforms were hard-earned. It took the actions of Count My Vote’s thousands of volunteers, supporters, and more than 115,000 registered voters to compel elected leaders to modernize the system and change the way they get elected. Count My Vote applauds Utah legislators who supported election reform.
Count My Vote’s leaders and supporters are committed to promoting, preserving, and implementing these vital election reforms. Count My Vote will stand with candidates and elected officials who support policies that enhance voter participation in Utah.
