Utah’s Aerospace and Defense Industry to Take Flight on Capitol Hill
What: The Governor’s Office of Economic Development (GOED), leading companies from the aerospace and defense industry and association representatives will gather on Utah’s Capitol Hill to discuss challenges and opportunities in the aerospace industry during the 2019 Aerospace Day on the Hill.
Why: Utah’s aerospace and defense industry accounts for more than 944 organizations and 31,390 jobs. Utah’s core aerospace and defense companies include design, composite manufacturing, software and control systems, sophisticated testing, and repair and maintenance.
Utah is home to many prime contractors such as BAE Systems, Boeing, Lockheed Martin, Albany Engineered Composites, L-3 Communications, and Northrop Grumman. Along with specialized companies such as Borsight, Janicki Industries, KIHOMAC, Parker Hannifin, MSC Aerospace, Hexcel, Petersen Inc., ATC Aerospace and Conductive Composites. In addition, Hill Air Force Base has more than 22,000 employees and is the primary maintainer for the F-35.

Utah Aerospace Pathways program will be doing a hands-on demonstration with students, education, and industry partners of a wingskin layup that demonstrates the power of composites.
Electrafly a Utah-based start-up will demonstrate a personal flying vehicle.
Fortem Technologies will demonstrate the DroneHunter and an “enemy drone” near the capital mimicking what a malicious drone might do. The enemy drone will fly into the digitized and restricted airspace around the capitol, which will trigger an autonomous command to attack.

Nominees announced for 2nd District Court vacancy
SALT LAKE CITY – The 2nd District Judicial Nominating Commission has selected nominees for a vacancy on the 2nd District Court. The vacancy results from the retirement of Judge Mark DeCaria, April 15, 2019. The 2nd Judicial District includes Davis, Morgan, and Weber counties.
The nominees for the vacancy are: Bryce Froerer, attorney/shareholder, Froerer & Miles, P.C.; T.R. Morgan, commissioner, Second District Court; Brandon Poll, criminal division chief, Davis County Attorney’s Office; Reuben Renstrom, justice court judge, South Ogden Justice Court, South Weber Justice Court, Harrisville Justice Court, Riverdale Justice Court, Woods Cross Justice Court; J.C. Ynchausti, justice court judge, Davis County Justice Court.
Written comments can be submitted to the 2nd District Judicial Nominating Commission Chair Mark Johnson at judicialvacancies@utah.gov or Commission on Criminal and Juvenile Justice, P.O. Box 142330, Salt Lake City, UT 84114-2330. The deadline for written comments is noon Feb. 19, 2019. The Nominating Commission may request further information or conduct an investigation of the nominees after reviewing public comments. After the public comment period, the names will be sent to Gov. Gary R. Herbert, who will have 30 days to make an appointment. Gov. Herbert’s appointee is subject to confirmation by the Utah Senate.

Life Science Industry to Gather on Capitol Hill
What: The Governor’s Office of Economic Development (GOED), BioUtah and the largest life science companies in the state will gather on Capitol Hill to show their support for Utah’s fastest growing industry. Companies from early stage startup to large life science companies will gather with the goal to expand the dialogue, discuss challenges and opportunities during 2019 Legislative Session.
Utah’s life science industry is one of the state’s strongest strategic industry clusters, employing more than 37,000 and commanding wages at 150 percent of the state average. One out of every 15 jobs in Utah is supported by the life sciences industry. The life science companies include research, development, distribution projects and services ranging from cutting-edge pharmaceuticals and medical devices, to diagnostic technologies and medical supplies.
