 Hi Jim,

It’s Valentine’s week but many of our local elderly are lonely hearts this holiday.  Just like the widower in Google’s Loretta Super Bowl commercial, many seniors have lost spouses.  Others have lost friends, or their kids live far away, and they have no one to bring them Valentine’s cheer.

In fact, a new study released by the UC San Diego School of Medicine reveals 85% of seniors surveyed say they’re lonely.

That’s why the local ‘Senior Cheer Patrol’ from SYNERGY HomeCare, a non-medical in-home care company, will play Cupid and surprise area seniors this week with a  Be-My-Valentine visit.

We invite you to join our SYNERGY HomeCare ‘Senior Cheer Patrol’ as we surprise area seniors with everything from flowers to food to fun to make them feel special!  Or we can come to your newsroom to demonstrate how to give seniors in your life ‘Be My Valentine’ cheer.

Why do this?

We’re a Nation of Lonely Hearts

  • Isolation is one of the biggest threats to the health of American seniors, and yet it remains among the most difficult to recognize. A recent study revealed that loneliness has the same impact on mortality as smoking 15 cigarettes a day, making it even more dangerous than obesity. (Cigna)

  • A study from Brigham Young University, tracked 3.5 million people over 35 years and attributed loneliness to a 26-32% rise in early death.

  • A Pew Research Center study reveals the number of adults who never married has reached an all-time high, meaning more adults enter their senior years with no companion.
  • Medicare data shows a lack of social contacts (social isolation) among older adults adds an estimated $6.7 billion to government spending yearly.

  • Loneliness is so pervasive that CareMore, a unit of Anthem health insurance, has professionals screen for loneliness during appointments for older adults.

You’re invited to join us as we visit area seniors, or we can come to your newsroom with a basket of ‘Be-My-Valentine’ cheer to show how to engage seniors this Valentine’s Day week.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

STATEMENT on Trump administration’s proposed budget cuts to Interior Department

DENVER—Today the Trump administration released a proposed budget for Fiscal Year 2021. The document proposes a dramatic cut of 16 percent for the Interior Department, which is tasked with managing national parks and public lands.

In response, the Center for Western Priorities released the following statement from Executive Director Jennifer Rokala:

“It’s no secret that the Trump administration is hellbent on opening up our public lands for drilling and mining. This proposed budget would further cripple public land managers and open the door for extractive industries.

“Slashing funding for our public lands directly contradicts the will of Westerners. In poll after poll, Western voters have consistently supported increasing funding for conservation and requiring corporations to pay a fair share for drilling and mining on public lands.

“Thankfully, bipartisan majorities in Congress have rejected previous attempts to gut the Interior Department budget and are poised to do so again. This attempt to kneecap the agency in charge of our parks and public lands is clearly dead on arrival.”

CWP staff will be available to provide more detailed analysis of the Interior budget after it is released by the Interior Department. To arrange an interview, contact Deputy Director Aaron Weiss at 720-279-0019 or aaron@westernpriorities.org..
