Dear Friends of FMC,
Happy New Year! How many of you are still staying strong with your resolutions?
Here at FMC, we’ve resolved for years to lift up the voices of youth who have lived experience in the systems we cover in the pages of The Chronicle of Social Change and Fostering Families Today. So we’re thrilled to kick of 2019 with two incredible opportunities for youth to speak up — and for the rest of us to listen.
Opening today in Los Angeles is the newest exhibit of the Foster Youth Museum (FYM), “See Me.” The FYM brings to life the experiences of youth in care through artifacts, photography, video portraits, writing and visual arts.
FYM’s last exhibition, "Lost Childhoods,” was viewed by over 70,000 people in the San Francisco Bay Area. It inspired many people to find a way to support foster youth in their area, from donating time and resources or volunteering as CASAs to even providing housing for youth.
FMC is collaborating with the museum for the Los Angeles run of “See Me” exhibit, a collection of portraits which will explore stories of a sometimes invisible community and demonstrate how art stimulates and heals. The exhibit will run through March 3 at St. John’s Cathedral, with a second exhibit to follow later this year.
We’re also currently running our second annual Youth Voice Writing Contest. Last year’s contest was such a hit that we’ve made it even bigger this year! With three prompts to choose from, we’ll be offering three $500 grand prizes, as well as prizes for runners-up and finalists.
Contest entries will be scored by a panel of judges, with the winning essays published on The Chronicle and in Fostering Families Today. If you know any young people who might be interested, please have them visit bit.ly/FMCContest for more information. We’ll be accepting submissions through February 15.
Keep your eyes peeled in the coming months for these youth-written stories. After all, they are the true experts on these systems we’re all working to improve.
