Utah firefighters continue to serve in Thomas Fire
SALT LAKE CITY (Dec. 15, 2017) – More than 100 firefighters from 20 Utah fire agencies are on a two-week deployment to the Thomas Fire (252,000 acres and 35 percent contained) in Ventura County, Calif. Our firefighters are deployed under a system of state-to-state mutual aid called the Emergency Management Assistance Compact. They are working long hours and not only serving, but also gaining valuable experience.
"I am especially proud of our Utah firefighters who are sacrificing time away from their families during this holiday season to lend strength in the fight against the devastating fires in California," said Gov. Herbert.
The following departments, in alphabetical order, have volunteered firefighters to the Thomas Fire:
Castle Dale
Cedar City
Draper
Fairview
Hurricane Valley
Layton
Murray
Price
Provo
Salt Lake City
Sandy
South Jordan
Sterling
Uintah City
Unified Fire Authority
Utah Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands
Wasatch County
Washington City
West Jordan
West Valley City
Utahns from each of these jurisdictions should be proud of their service.
“Jeanette and I also join the state of California in mourning the passing of Fire Engineer Cory Iverson from Cal Fire San Diego, who gave the ultimate sacrifice on Thursday, Dec. 14, while fighting the Thomas Fire," Gov. Herbert said.

Governor appoints Brody Keisel to the Sixth District Juvenile Court
SALT LAKE CITY (Dec. 15, 2017) – Gov. Gary R. Herbert has appointed Brody Keisel as a judge on the Sixth District Juvenile Court.
“Brody Keisel is uniquely qualified to serve on the bench of the Sixth District Juvenile Court,” Gov. Herbert said. “His years of experience in this district will serve him well, and he will make wise and balanced decisions as he works with our young citizens.”
Keisel previously served as Sanpete County Attorney, Municipal Prosecutor in Manti, and as Deputy Sanpete County Attorney. He has been responsible for Sixth District Court prosecutions since 2003, and is an adjunct professor in criminal law at Snow College. Keisel received a J.D. from the University of Nebraska School of Law.
“I am truly honored and humbled by Governor Herbert appointing me to the Juvenile Court bench,” said Keisel. “It is a privilege and great trust given me to work with our young citizens to help them become productive, law-abiding adults by leading them back from wayward paths, helping them recognize their inner-goodness and future potential.”
Subject to confirmation by the Utah Senate, Keisel will replace retiring Judge Paul Lyman.
