LGBTQ advocacy group and conservative think tank partner to host Striving for Inclusion: A Religious Liberty Symposium
SALT LAKE CITY — Today PARITY and Sutherland Institute announced a joint event, “Striving for Inclusion: A Religious Liberty Symposium.” It will be held Tuesday morning, May 14, at the Utah State Capitol complex. Tim Schultz, president of the 1st Amendment Partnership, will keynote the event, which will also include panel discussions with policy thought leaders and religious leaders.
This event is open to media who RSVP to Kelsey Witt at kelsey@sifreedom.org.
The symposium will focus on how religion can have a unifying impact in a time of political division and how religious and political inclusivity is vital to local communities, states, and the nation. It will include lunch for registrants and be followed by an optional Blessed by Difference workshop led by Parity. If you are interested in attending Blessed by Difference, please complete this additional registration.
“The culture wars are tearing this country apart,” said the Rev. Marian Edmonds-Allen, executive director of Parity. “It’s time for LGBTQ advocates and religious freedom proponents to find a way not only to communicate, but to collaborate.”
“Those at both extremes who continue fighting this culture war are laboring under a false premise, straight out of the 'Harry Potter' series: That neither side can live (or win) while the other survives,” said Derek Monson, vice president of policy for Sutherland Institute. “Under this view, LGBTQ equality and religious freedom cannot coexist. But as with the fictional rivalry between Harry Potter and Voldemort, this premise belongs to a fantasy world.”
Sutherland Institute will also launch a new policy publication, Religious Liberty: Striving for Inclusion, at this event. Sign up to download a free copy here.

MAY 8, 2019 - Trash Boat and Songs That Saved My Life have shared Trash Boat's cover of Linkin Park's "Given Up" for Mental Health Awareness Month (Mental Health May). Fans can listen here: smarturl.it/TrashBoatSTSML
The single is part of Songs That Saved My Life's Mental Health May. Trash Boat frontman Tobi Duncan released a video testimonial alongside the track, which can be viewed here: smarturl.it/STSMLTobiDuncan. For more information on Songs That Saved My Life, please visit songsthatsavedmylife.com.
Speaking to the single, Tobi said, "I remember watching a radio interview Chester Bennington did in February 2017, just 5 months before his death. He spoke so plainly and openly about his suffering to the extent that, with the benefit of hindsight, it was obviously a desperate cry for help." He continued, "May is mental health awareness month, and with this cover comes a reminder to be the voice that counterbalances the army of negativity in someone's head. Make the first move, ask the difficult questions and keep the conversation going, even if it seems helpless. You CAN make a difference."
Trash Boat released Crown Shyness last summer via Hopeless Records. The album explores similarly disparate emotions, juxtaposing hard-fought introspection against external strife to create a propulsive, captivating blend of punk and melodic hardcore. It it was produced by Andrew Wade (A Day To Remember, Neck Deep).
Songs That Saved My Life looks to engage current artists with cover versions of those songs and share those stories with the world. This project benefits a variety of mental health and suicide prevention organizations. Currently, this project benefits Crisis Text Line, Hope For The Day, The Trevor Project, and To Write Love On Her Arms. Last year, they released the Songs That Saved My Life compilation, featuring covers from bands like Neck Deep, Against Me!, Taking Back Sunday, Dan Campbell and Ace Enders, Movements, The Maine, Dance Gavin Dance, and more.
Sub City, the 501(c)(3) non-profit arm of Hopeless, donates funds and raises awareness for various non-profit organizations by connecting artists, fans and causes they are passionate about. Sub City has raised over 2.5 million dollars for more than 50 non-profit organizations including Living the Dream, It Gets Better Project, A Place Called Home, DoSomething.org, and New Directions for Youth.
