Perry police officers are now mandatorily wearing body cameras, the first in Northern Utah. Each camera’s cost is about $500, with the dash cameras costing about $5000, Chief Dale Weese says, “The new body cameras are superior.  You can get video whether people are in front of the car or not. This should help with possible conflicts that arise. The officers have been training for several months with the cameras.”

Work has begun on 1100 S. / I-15 Interchange. The diverging diamond interchange will result in improved access to the interstate ramps. The project will take 16-18 months for completion.  During the Fall of 2013 through Spring of 2014, work will be on the north half of the bridge. In the Spring of 2014, traffic will switch to the north half of the bridge.  Demolition of the old bridge and construction for the south half of the bridge is scheduled for the Fall of 2014. During construction, drivers may expect approximately four single-direction closures and two full-night closures of I-15, and one weekend closure of H-91 (1100 South). Traffic will be re-routed during all closures. Notification will be given in advance of closures thru the project’s website, weekly email updates, and the UDOT traffic “APP”. Work will generally take place from 7am to 6pm, Monday thru Friday, with weekend work possible. City officials have big plans for the Perry's gun range. They want to bring in the NRA to run shooting competitions and host training for police from around the State.  Perry’s gun range is likely the only 1,000-yard shooting tract in Utah. It’s located at the end of a half-mile dirt road just west of the interstate. "It's going to be the premier gun range in the state by the end of next year," Police Chief Dale Weese said.  So far everything has been done with grants and volunteer contributions. Last month the City put together a gun range committee that will be required for new federal grants, with Chief Weese as chairman. Many local businesses have donated time and labor to the gun range.

Chief Weese, at the national level as a completion shooter, and a certified gun range master and instructor, makes him a great overseer for the range. Chief Weese is a proponent of training, and a firm believer that well-trained officers do a better job. He says, “We want people to use the facility and not be shooting in the foothills, this has become very dangerous with all the hikers and bikers and there has been a lot of problems in other areas with fires being started from target practice.”
