New York, NY, March 17, 2017 — David Miliband, president and CEO of the International Rescue Committee, hailed a Federal Court ruling to temporarily halt a 120-day suspension of refugee arrivals through the U.S. refugee resettlement program and a lowering of admissions from 110,000 in FY17 to 50,000, but said that “weeks of whiplash is causing real pain for people that already have been through hell, and it’s disrupting a proven, solid program. Multiple orders and subsequent court rulings provide hope one week and fear the next,” said Miliband.
“The United States can and should continue to provide refuge for the most vulnerable while reviewing the U.S. resettlement program, which is regarded as the strongest in the world. We estimate that about 11,000 security-vetted refugees are standing by to resettle. The IRC also is standing by, ready to support their resettlement and integration into U.S. communities. All of this can be done while the program is continuously reviewed.”

Kenneth Magee announces publication of new memoir
SALEM, Ore. – Kenneth Magee’s new memoir, “Beyond Surprise: The Best You’ve Got” (published by Inspiring Voices), shares both his love for adventure and his search for goodness and peace around the world.
The book takes place in Afghanistan, Iraq, Sumatra-Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Uganda, Liberia, El Salvador, Turkey and near Magee’s home in Oregon. Magee, his American and Canadian partners on the trips and the people they help are all a part of the narrative.
Magee believes his book is relevant to people with the ability to help others because of “the past and present deep need for humanitarian aid given with deep empathy and even touches of humor. Hopefully it can encourage others to care for people who are quite different from themselves.”

A large part of my role as a physician has been to listen – both here in Klamath Falls, Oregon, and in my journeys with disaster teams to hurting parts of the world. Approaching danger and suffering people with the realism of “we are here to help where we can, but we also want to learn from you,” opens doors. Kenneth Magee was born in Oregon. He served as a U.S. Army medic during the Korean War. After he married Jo Anne, he taught grade school for three years and then attended medical school.
