Gov. Herbert orders flags lowered for Baton Rouge victims
SALT LAKE CITY (July 18, 2016) – Gov. Gary R. Herbert has authorized the lowering of the flag of the United States of America and the flag of the state of Utah to honor victims of the attack on police officers in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
Gov. Herbert issued the following statement:
“Jeanette and I are saddened to learn of another violent attack on law enforcement officers and extend our deepest condolences to the many family members, friends and colleagues who will feel the impact of this loss for years to come. We pray that our nation will come together and put an end to the terrible violence and accompanying heartache that afflicts all of us at this time.”
Previously the flags were to be raised on Tuesday, July 19, 2016. Instead, flags will continue to fly at half-staff until sunset on Friday, July 22, 2016.

Gov. Herbert orders flags lowered for France victims
SALT LAKE CITY (July 15, 2016) - Gov. Gary R. Herbert has authorized the lowering of the flag of the United States of America and the flag of the state of Utah to honor the victims of the terrorist attack in Nice, France.
Gov. Herbert issued the following statement:
“We lower flags today in a symbol of collective mourning that is becoming far too common in our country and world. Jeanette and I extend our deepest condolences to those impacted by the terrible tragedy in France. As Utahns, we join with others in prayer for the families and friends of those affected by this despicable terrorist attack.”
The flags will be flown at half-staff beginning immediately, Friday, July 15, 2016 until sunset on Tuesday, July 19, 2016.

Gov. Herbert signs special session bills
SALT LAKE CITY (July 18, 2016) – Gov. Gary R. Herbert has signed all eight bills passed by the Utah State Legislature during the July special session.
Effective immediately, the Division of Facilities Construction and Management (DFCM) can begin work on a new 10,000-seat arena at the Utah State Fairpark to be completed by July 2017. The arena will be constructed using funds from state and local governments, as well as private sector donations.
“The State Fair is a great example of Utahns from every part of our state coming together—rural and urban, Republican and Democrat,” Gov. Herbert said. “I appreciate the partnership between local governments and the private sector that has made this facility possible. Many wonderful community events will take place here in the years to come.”
The governor also signed HB 3003, which enhances penalties for operating drones in flight restriction areas during wildfires and allows law enforcement officers to neutralize drones in certain cases. The law became necessary after drones interfered with fire suppression efforts this summer on multiple occasions.
“Public safety has always been my top priority and this new law will allow us to more effectively fight wildfires,” Gov. Herbert said. “We are not going to tolerate reckless drone interference during wildfire season. With this law, Utah has taken the necessary precautions to protect our emergency management personnel and prevent additional interference that compromises public safety.”
