With an ever increasing number of grandparents now raising grandchildren in the United States we realized that there is a great need for a support group in our area. Which our grandchildrens counselor has enthusiastically agreed. We would like to help those that have been, are or are new to this life style to find others like themselves. To help those who r new to get the support needed in a confusing atmostphere that many of us have been through when dealing w/ courts & DCFS. Getting the right info & understanding the prossess can help grandparents relieve the confusion of having so much information being thrown at them at once. We would also have a need for help in purchasing or donations of recording devices for use of grandparents going into these meetings so they can later have someone set down & go through that information step by step helping them through this process exspeacilly when, in our own experences, abbreviations were often used that made no sense to us at all. On top of all this confusion, u need to realize many of these same grandparents are dealing w/the lose of their own Child or children that they've already raised. Many not knowing, because of drugs, as it was in our case, were those children are & if they're ok? During the processes w/DCFS (department of family services) we were told Only those w/background checks through DCFS were allowed to babysit the kids.We are hoping through this support group we will b able to provide a list of exceptiable willing grandparents that have already gone through the DCFS background checks needed to help get babysitters & transportation when needed . We have noticed through our own experience (though this might be only because the individuals that we have worked w/) at DCFS that grandparents are not being taken serious with information that can help in aiding our grandchildren. We do not want this to b a complaint group but one that can come up w/ideas that can help the process & improve the lives of grandparents & their grandchildren. We want to reach out to the grandparents who could use this help. We have heard from others in this Valley that they too believe this support group is greatly needed!
