What: The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources has been working closely with Salt Lake City to renovate the pond at Fairmont Park and create a new community fishery. All the construction work is finally done, and hundreds of fish will be stocked into the pond next Wednesday, before the grand-opening ceremony. DWR personnel will have rods and reels on hand so that children who attend the ceremony can try to catch some of the freshly stocked fish. The revamped fishing pond will provide a great place for local residents to get outdoors and enjoy a fun activity with friends and family.
When: Wednesday, June 27. The fish will likely be stocked early in the day (call contact for exact time), and the grand-opening ceremony will begin at 4 p.m.
Where: Fairmont Park (1049 E. Sugarmont Dr. in Salt Lake City)
What: Guzzlers are large devices that catch and store water from snow and rain. They provide drinking water for wildlife and are especially important in hot, dry years. Next Tuesday, DWR personnel will install three guzzlers in the roadless area of the Book Cliffs. Bison, mule deer, elk, black bears and many other species will use the guzzlers to obtain drinking water during the dry summer months.
When: Helicopters will fly the guzzlers into the installation sites, and DWR employees will install them on June 26 (call one of the contacts to arrange a visit and interview).
Sharpshooting women hit their targets at the Josie Shoot
What: The Josie Shoot is a shooting competition named after legendary Utah rancher and outdoorswoman, Josie Bassett. Women of all ages — many from the same families — will compete with their rifles to see who can outshoot the others. This year is the 30th annual Josie Shoot, and it has become a fun tradition for many women in Utah’s Uintah Basin.
When: Saturday, June 30 at 8 a.m.
Where: The Vernal Rod and Gun Club (3495 N. 2500 W. in Vernal)
