End the use of gas chamber euthanasia in Utah shelters
WHAT: Utah constituents have been invited by the Humane Society of Utah to show their support of SB 197 – Animal Shelter Amendments, which is on the Senate Government Operations and Political Subdivisions Committee agenda Friday, Feb. 27, at 8 a.m. in room 415 at the State Capitol.

WHY: The Humane Society of Utah supports SB 197, which would authorize an animal shelter to euthanize an animal by sodium pentobarbital or a derivative as the exclusive method for euthanasia of an animal; would allow for alternative methods/the most humane method available in the case of emergency situations; prohibit an animal shelter from using certain methods -- carbon monoxide gas or any other lethal gas chamber to euthanize an animal; require the dismantling of any existing chamber by Aug. 1, 2015; require an animal shelter to adopt a euthanasia policy and training program reviewed and approved by a licensed Utah veterinarian and require euthanasia personnel to attend and document such training biennially.
