A breaking feature in the September issue of Women’s Health magazine identifies 10 “derm deserts” across the U.S., and the state of Utah is one of them. What does that mean? A “derm desert” is an area without a single dermatologist within 50 or even 100 miles, or one with a menacingly low number of these docs for the population. Areas with fewer derms ultimately have a greater prevalence of melanoma deaths.
With a population of 3 million, the entire state of Utah only has 22 dermatologists - and claims the highest melanoma death rate in the country. To treat everyone, the state would need 120 derms.
Why are “derm deserts” a fatal problem? In a midsize city, the average wait time to get an appointment with a derm for a skin exam is 35 days – but 14 days is the time frame in which melanoma should be diagnosed and treated after being noticed by a patient to ensure the best survival. And, melanoma rates are on the rise: since the 1970s, melanoma rates among females ages 18 to 39 have skyrocketed by 800 percent.
Women’s Health’s “Derm Desserts” feature reveals the shocking dermatologist shortage that is putting millions of lives at risk. Through a 6-month investigation, we uncovered land mines within the healthcare system, hospital community, and insurance companies that are contributing to a dermatologist shortage that is impacting towns across the U.S., especially in Utah.
"The stakes here are life-or-death, because areas with fewer dermatologists have more melanoma deaths," says Women's Health Editor-In-Chief Amy Keller Laird. "It's critical that people in derm deserts become advocates for their own health, and our feature arms them with the tools they need to do so."
For residents in Utah, Women’s Health encourages you to take your health into your own hands. Here’s what you can do to monitor and fight for your health:
It is Asymmetrical.
It has an irregular Border.
It is made up of different Colors.
It has a Diameter larger than a pencil eraser.
It’s Evolving or changing in size, shape, or color, or it’s painful, itchy or bleeds.
3. See a mole with any of these? Call a derm ASAP.
Rather than asking for a skin check, be specific and say to the receptionist: “I have a mole that’s quickly changing/bleeding and I’m afraid that it’s melanoma.” This makes a big difference in how quickly you are seen. If that doesn’t work, demand to speak with a doctor or a nurse. Still nothing? Offer to send a photo of the mole.
