The Community Foundation of Utah Awards More Scholarships than Ever

$75,300 in scholarship funds awarded to deserving students in Utah and beyond

SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH – Forty four students planning to attend college in Utah and Idaho have been selected to receive scholarship awards from one of the 14 scholarship funds managed by the Community Foundation of Utah. This year, awards to support post-secondary education during the 2015-16 academic year range from $500 to $10,000 per student, totaling more than $75,000.

To be considered for a scholarship through the Community Foundation of Utah, applicants are required to submit an application that determines eligibility. Because of the wide variety of scholarships offered through the Foundation, eligibility requirements can range from academic achievement to community involvement as well as very specific criteria depending on the scholarship. Applications are reviewed and recipients selected through a rigorous process performed by designated committees which are comprised of donors, area experts, and community members.

Lizzie McCrery, scholarships coordinator at the Community Foundation of Utah states, “Post-secondary education is expensive and the financial burden can be enough to discourage students from pursuing education after high school. Through unique scholarship opportunities and the generosity of donors who make these awards possible, post-secondary education has become a reality for some who may never have thought it possible.” Scholarship funds that made awards this year include:

·         The African Women's Education Fund Scholarship provides African women refugees a grant to support their pursuit of education, technical training or certification.

·         The Collester Scholarship supports high achieving high school graduates who face economic barriers in the pursuit of post-secondary education.

·         The EMBA Alumni Service Scholarship goes to undergraduates and post-graduates engaged in exceptional community service activities.

·         The Equality Leadership Fund Scholarship funds the education of students who have demonstrated leadership in the LGBT rights movement.

·         The Home Education Leadership Scholarship enables children who have been home-schooled to pursue a post-secondary education.

·         The Latter-day Pioneer Scholarship supports students who are first or second generation converts to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

·         The Natural History Museum of Utah Youth Teaching Youth Scholarship is awarded to graduates of the museum’s science education Youth Teaching Youth program.

·         The Sit with Me Sunday Scholarship supports the post-secondary education of LGBTQ students that are (or have been) members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

·         The Scrooge Scholarship provides support for the post-secondary education of a parent or legal guardian of a child with specific disabilities.
