Identifying Solutions with the Federal Railroad Administration

When we’re in a hurry and need to get somewhere, it can be frustrating if we’re stopped by a train.  They need to do their jobs and we need to do ours.  However, the Federal Railroad Administration or FRA has established a new, dedicated webpage at www.fra.dot.gov/blockedcrossings.  This will allow the public and all law enforcement to notify and report of any blocked highway-rail crossings within Harrisville City.  Just to clarify, blocked crossings are when the flow of traffic (whether this be motor vehicle or a pedestrian) is impeded due to a stopped train.  This could time frame can vary.

FRA would like to identify possible solutions with the community as to how this situation can be better. There are some safety risks associated with blocked crossings and particularly where trains obstruct roadway and pedestrian movement for long periods of time. Blocked crossings can have a noxious effect on quality of life such as making people late for work, late for school, appointments and adding to roadway congestion.  According to the Harrisville City Webpage, “There are approximately 130,000 public highway/rail grade crossings in the United States.”

The FRA is asking the public to use their website to report specific information about blocked crossings.  This needs to include the date, time, location and duration.  The total time to fill out the report is about 3 minutes.  FRA will then use the information they acquire to have a complete picture of the situation. Then, the information will further go onto stakeholders, who will use it to accommodate local solutions.

News about the Transfer Station

A new booth has been added at the entry of the transfer station (located at 867 Wilson Lane, Ogden) which will allow loads of 500 lbs. or less to pay $10.00 cash and by-pass the scale house.  Did you know the transfer station sells mulch, compost, and colored wood chips for all your landscaping needs? All wood products have been recycled from your own green waste.  If you’d like to check the website for further information, including prices go to http://www.webercountyutah.gov/ You may also call 801-399-8360

Don’t forget that winter parking is ongoing from November 1st until April 1st.  Please keep your parked cars off city streets between the hours of 1:00 a.m. and 9 a.m.  This continues to help our public works department do their job of clearing the roads in the winter storms and keeping the city safe.  Remember, home owners are responsible for keeping snow from sidewalks in front of their homes and private driveways.
