In a 7-2 ruling just released, the Supreme Court says Colorado violated Christian baker Jack Phillips’ constitutional rights by punishing him for declining to make a custom wedding cake for a same-sex couple in violation of his religious beliefs. We’ve got that news and a roundup of our related coverage.
The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in favor today of Jack Phillips, the owner of Masterpiece Cakeshop in Lakewood, Colorado, who declined to bake a cake for a same-sex wedding ceremony because of his religious beliefs.
In The Daily Signal’s feature video, Jack and daughter Lisa Eldfrick tell the story from their side, and share how this journey has affected their faith.
At one point, Justice Stephen Breyer followed up on a question from Justice Neil Gorsuch about whether a cake artist could be forced to create a cross-shaped cake for a religious group that shared the beliefs of the KKK.
Kristen Waggoner says her father taught her from Scripture about “being an Esther, being a Deborah, used by God,” she says, and that “joy and fulfillment come from having a purpose that’s bigger than ourselves.”
In 2014, Colorado Civil Rights Commissioner Diann Rice compared Jack Phillips to perpetrators of the Holocaust.
Jack Phillips says he faced a loss of at least $100,000 a year after Colorado judges ruled that his Masterpiece Cakeshop must make wedding cakes for same-sex couples as well as opposite-sex couples.
“We’re here to buy stuff from him and support him,” Matt said, in a video he and T.J. made for Alliance Defending Freedom, “because we don’t think any artist should be forced to create for something that violates their beliefs.”
“I love people. They’re all welcome to come in,” Phillips says in a lengthy interview with The Daily Signal. “There’s just certain events, certain cakes that I don’t make. That was one of them.”
