Lee Reacts To Outdoor Retail Industry Press Event on Bears Ears

SALT LAKE CITY—Senator Mike Lee (R-UT) issued the following statement today in response to the outdoor retail industry press event in support of President Obama designating Bears Ears as a national monument. Video of the statement is available here.

"I was disappointed when I learned that some of the largest manufacturers of outdoor equipment have come out in support of the federal government turning the Bears Ears region into a national monument,” Lee said. “I spent much of last week meeting with the people of San Juan County -- including many representatives of the Native American tribes whose ancestors settled the Bears Ears hundreds of years ago -- and it is clear that they do not want big business colluding with the federal government to take away their land and threaten their way of life. The people of San Juan County want to preserve the natural beauty and conserve the ecosystem of Bears Ears more than anyone -- but they want to do so in a way that protects and promotes economic opportunity in their county, which is the poorest in the state. I encourage the leaders of the outdoor retail industry to recognize that they share a common purpose with the people of San Juan County and that a national monument will prevent them from achieving their shared goals.”
