Gov. Herbert statement on the death of Officer Cody Brotherson
SALT LAKE CITY (Nov. 6, 2016) – Gov. Gary R. Herbert issued the following statement following the death of West Valley City police officer Cody Brotherson who was killed in the line of duty Sunday morning:
“It is with heavy hearts that Jeanette and I join all Utahns in mourning the passing of Officer Cody Brotherson, who gave the ultimate sacrifice this morning. We are heartbroken to lose such a young and dedicated officer who by all accounts had a bright future ahead of him.
“Once again we face a tragic reminder of the selflessness and unwavering courage that is required of our peace officers and their families each day. We cannot thank enough those who put their lives on the line to serve, defend and protect our communities. Officer Brotherson’s sacrifice will not be forgotten. We offer our prayers and sincere condolences to his family, fiancée, friends, and the entire law enforcement community at this difficult time.”
Gov. Herbert will order the lowering of the Flag of the United States of America and the Flag of the State of Utah on the day of Officer Brotherson’s funeral.

Nominees announced for 3rd District Court vacancy
SALT LAKE CITY – The 3rd District Judicial Nominating Commission has selected nominees for a vacancy on the 3rd District Court. The vacancy results from the retirement of Judge Paul Maughan, effective December 1, 2016. The 3rd Judicial District includes Salt Lake, Summit and Tooele counties.
The nominees for the vacancy are: Kent Holmberg, assistant attorney general, Utah Attorney General’s Office; Robert Lund, assistant U.S. attorney, United States Attorney’s Office; Janise Macanas, assistant attorney general, Utah Attorney General’s Office; R. Josh Player, unit chief/team leader, Salt Lake County District Attorney’s Office; Kevin Simon, shareholder/partner, Strachan, Strachan & Simon, P.C.
Written comments can be submitted to the 3rd District Judicial Nominating Commission Chair Jack Wixom at judicialvacancies@utah.gov or Commission on Criminal and Juvenile Justice, P.O. Box 142330, Salt Lake City, UT 84114-2330. The deadline for written comments is noon Nov. 15, 2016. The Nominating Commission may request further information or conduct an investigation of the nominees after reviewing public comments. After the public comment period, the names will be sent to Gov. Gary R. Herbert, who will have 30 days to make an appointment. Gov. Herbert’s appointee is subject to confirmation by the Utah Senate.
