UNITED WAY OF SALT LAKE HONORED AS A PACESETTER FOR EARLY LITERACY WORK
Campaign for Grade-Level Reading Recognizes United Way of Salt Lake as Exemplary
Salt Lake City – United Way of Salt Lake has been honored as a Pacesetter by the Campaign for Grade-Level Reading for exemplary work in eliminating barriers faced by children from low-income families on the path to becoming proficient readers.
“Pacesetter Honors are among the highest awards presented by the GLR Campaign,” said Ralph Smith, the managing director of the Campaign for Grade-Level Reading. “We are very proud of United Way of Salt Lake and the numerous organizations and individuals behind the community for joining forces and working tirelessly to uplift children and families. They remind us that we are seeing great progress and real results all across the country."
“The Pacesetter award is an honor and a privilege,” said Bill Crim, United Way of Salt Lake President and CEO. “But it is critical to remember this is an award for our partnerships, not just United Way. This is a result of afterschool providers, districts, state agencies, businesses, teachers, principals and others coming together to create a whole that is greater than the sum of its parts. We cannot say thank you enough to everyone involved.”
Specifically, the GLR Campaign recognized United Way of Salt Lake as a 2017 Pacesetter for demonstrating exemplary work in aspects of the Campaign’s framework for success, scale and sustainability, by driving with data and prioritizing children and families who are especially vulnerable.
Using the Results-Based Accountability framework, UWSL selected eight community-level outcomes for improvement, and developed core indicators to measure results for each, along with tools for collecting and analyzing data for continuous improvement.
UWSL is also making efforts to give priority to children and families who are especially vulnerable, by adapting a full-service school model for implementation in two housing complexes. Additionally, UWSL focuses on the needs of immigrant and refugee students and their families. Family liaisons conduct home visits to help families access needed resources, learn to navigate the educational system and become involved in their children’s educational success.
Reading proficiency by the end of third grade is a critical milestone toward high school graduation and career success because it marks the transition from “learning to read” to “reading to learn.” National tests show that two-thirds of U.S. fourth graders (four-fifths of whom are from low-income families) are not reading proficiently. Students who have not mastered reading by that time are more likely to drop out of high school and struggle throughout their lives.
