Updates from Utah Gov - Organizations

Wednesday, November 9, 2016 - 9:00am

It's no surprise that we're shocked -- a Trump Presidency seemed unthinkable a month ago.

The question for all of us in the global food movement is what do we do now?

No matter where you live in the world, what happened last night in the United States impacts you -- and the future of food.

How can we now come together and mobilize to build a more economically and environmentally sustainable and socially just food system?

Food Tank wants to know your ideas, your questions, and what worries -- or what excites -- you the most about the next four years.

Tell us what you think Food Tank should be focusing on.

National Education Association president available for post-election reaction

Hillary Clinton Superdelegate Lily Eskelsen García available to talk presidential, down ballot election results and election’s impact on students, working families

NEW YORK — As the countdown is underway when the first election results come in, the National Education Association, the nation’s largest labor union with 3 million members, is crediting its strategic communications and voter mobilization operations with helping Hillary Clinton secure a victory tonight.

Of NEA’s 3 million members, 76 percent are women. The majority of NEA members are college educated (many with advanced degrees) and reside in the suburbs and exurbs. NEA members not only live in every state, but they also reside in every congressional district. One particular voting bloc, college educated white women, voted for Mitt Romney by a 6-point margin in 2012. NEA’s ability to mobilize its members has had a major impact on reversing this outcome in Clinton’s favor.

The reversal comes in part from NEA’s robust political program and an unmatched ground game in NEA’s “Educators for Hillary” member engagement campaign, which both have led the organization to set records with its get-out-the-vote efforts this presidential election cycle. Preliminary figures show more than 64,418 NEA members volunteered for the “Educators for Hillary” campaign, which represents seven times the number of NEA members who volunteered in the previous 2012 presidential campaign cycle. NEA members completed approximately 144,941 volunteer phone banking, canvassing or voter registration shifts, which resulted in 885,652 door knocks and more than 3.3 million phone calls. These numbers will increase as additional data from the field is reported. Leading up to Election Day, NEA launched a digital and direct mail GOTV blitz in 17 battleground states targeting NEA members identified as college-educated women, Latinos and millennials.

The 2016 presidential campaign also marks the longest-ever campaign in which NEA has engaged. The presidential recommendation process began in earnest in early 2015, with candidate questionnaires and interviews in June of that year, culminating in NEA’s recommendation in October 2015, which came at a critical time in Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign. After an extended and hard-fought primary, NEA prepared and mobilized its resources for the general election and to leave a lasting footprint on the 2016 election from the White House to State Houses across the country.

Last night, voters all across the country shocked the political and media establishments. America’s message was simple: we are tired of corrupt insider dealing in Washington and the self-serving nature of the establishment political class.

This didn’t happen by chance. Millions of Americans found a reason to engage in the political process. Whether it was opposition to massive unconstitutional government, desire to drain the corrupt swamp, or an earnest desire to see a stronger, more prosperous America, Americans rallied around Donald J. Trump.

The conservative movement -- from those that fought for Reagan to those that helped found the Tea Party -- has played an important role and will continue to play an important role in the months and years to come. Together, we will be the anchor for the policies and ideas that will shape the priorities that the Trump Administration will pursue.

We will do our part. Heritage Action will continue to support and amplify conservative policies that better the lives of each and every American. And as we have done for the last six years, we oppose policies that cater to the well-connected or expand the federal government’s role in civil society. Together, we will help raise the voices of our 16,500 Sentinels and over 500,000 activists to ensure campaign promises are not simply discarded after the votes are counted.

Last night, America demanded change, they demanded a change to the status quo and today we woke up to a new America ready to put our nation back on track and restore us to greatness.

It’s a new day in America -- we look forward to leading it with you.
