Teach M y Child Rule of Law - Not Democracy

Greg and Genise Martin, contacted two of their child’s fifth grade teachers at North Ogden Elementary and the school principal beginning in mid February with concerns about incorrect teachings being taught through songs to the fifth grade. The Martins say the songs, which were taught and practiced for several weeks, incorrectly state that our nation was founded as a “democracy.” On the 25th of March, North Ogden Elementary Principal, Ralph Aar- dema, told the Sentinel News that the school had these songs that begin with the republic and end with a new democracy, and that “no”, the school was not going to change the words “democracy” to “republic”. When the Martins realized that the school was not going to stop singing the incorrect songs, they notified the school that their child was released from practicing and performing the songs with the other fifth graders performed on April 15th. Although North Ogden Elementary agreed that their child did not need to participate in the performance, the Martins say that the school didn’t need to give agreement for their child not to participate as that decision was the parents’ to make. Mrs. Martin says their child knew the “democracy” teaching was wrong, and the Martins will not support the incorrect teaching. In fact, their child was the one who first felt uncomfortable with the incorrect word in the songs. Mrs. Martin says that “it definitely does matter what kind of government we have.” Mrs. Martin states that she is certainly not alone in her concern about our form of government. Originally our founders didn’t want government by majority polls either. A Republic is a government by law – not just changing something because the majority of the people want it. She said Cleon Skousen wrote in his book, The 5,000 Year Leap that “…the introduction of the word “democracy” (to describe the United States) was actually designed as an attack on the Constitutional structure of government and the basic rights it was designed to protect.” Communist revolutionaries Vladimir Lenin and Mao Tse-tung were champions of democracy as a vehicle to socialism. Mr. Scott Bradley, a recent U.S. Senate candidate, has indicated, “history shows that democracy is the road to tyranny and goes hand in hand with social- sim.” Mrs. Martin has also referred to the principles of the Constitution as supported by Scott Bradley– who is also a U.S. Constitutional scholar. Mr. Bradley cited James Madison’s record from Madison’s Journal of the Federal Convention regarding initial dangers of “democracy”. Mr. Bradley’s book To Preserve the Nation (2009 Scott N. Bradley) contains the following reference relating to Madison’s Journal: “On May 31, 1787, at the beginning of the constitutional convention, Edmund Randolph told his fellow delegates that the purpose of the convention was ’to provide a cure for the evils under which the United States labored; that in tracing these evils to their origin, every man had found it in the turbulence and follies of democracy.” John Adams is quoted in the book To Preserve the Nation regarding “the shortcomings of democracy: ‘Remember, democracy never lasts long. It soon wastes, exhausts, and murders itself. There never was a democracy yet that did not commit suicide.’” Communist revolutionary Karl Marx was favorable of and sought to foster democracy. In The Communist Manifesto, he stated, “We have seen above that the first step in the revolution by the working class is to raise the proletariat to the position of ruling class, to win the battle of democracy.” Mr. Bradley’s message is that a Constitutional Republic is what the Founding Fathers intended - that is a government where the rule of law is dependent on God-given rights, where government officials are accountable for their actions, and officials are representatives of the people. A democracy as understood by our Founding Fathers is none of those things. Mrs. Martin says she wants to make sure people know that she appreciates the good that the school employees do, and that it is nothing personal. It’s just that she knows it is imperative that we pass on the keys of freedom to future generations.

Editor’s view: Our children especially need to understand the principles of Constitutional Government. It does not help to allow confusing terminology and messages to obscure the blessings of liberty as provided by our divinely inspired founding fathers through the principles of the Declaration of Independence and our U.S. Constitution.
