OGDEN FILM FESTIVAL WELCOMES ATTENDEES

June 1, 2017

OGDEN, UT – The Inaugural Ogden Film Festival will welcome attendees starting at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, June 2 at Peery’s Egyptian Theater. The event will coincide with Ogden City’s First Friday Art Stroll and is a community partnership with the Egyptian Theatre Foundation, Circa3 and Ogden Arts Festival. Tickets can be purchased at the theater’s box office or online at smithtix.com. The price of admission to the festival is only $5 per person.

“We can’t think of a better way to spend one of the first weekends of the summer,” said festival committee member Spencer Bott. “To enjoy a night of great local art in the historic Peery’s Egyptian Theater for only $5 is a deal too good to pass up.”

Event Schedule

6:00 PM - Doors open to the sound of the Mighty Wurlitzer Pipe Organ

7:00 PM - Short Film Segment

8:30 PM Intermission - Voting begins for Audience Award

8:45 PM - Short Film Directors Q&A

9:00 PM - ‘Under an Arctic Sky’ by Chris Burkard

The evening will conclude with a special screening of Under an Arctic Sky by Chris Burkard and Sweatpants Media. The film documents six surfers who set sail along the frozen shores of Iceland as the worst storm in twenty-five years arrives. The storm blows through, shuts down the country, and turns the search for waves into a life-threatening prospect. The film premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival earlier this year.

Tickets available at smithtix.com and the Peery’s Egyptian Theater Box Office.

$5 parking is available from 5:30p-7p in the Kiesel garage.

Platelet donation through the Red Cross now available in Layton for the first time

Platelets are critical to helping patients kick cancer

LAYTON, Utah (June 1, 2017) — For the first time, people wanting to make a lifesaving difference in Layton and surrounding areas, can now donate platelets at the American Red Cross Layton Blood Donation Center. As the donation center begins to collect platelets, nationally, the Red Cross is urging those who have never given blood before to make an appointment to give blood or platelets now and help sustain a sufficient community blood supply this summer. While the need for blood is constant during the summer months, the Red Cross experiences a drastic decline in new donors. Nationwide, nearly one-third fewer new donors came out to give last summer than during the rest of the year.

WHAT:           Layton Blood Donation Center will began collecting platelet donations for patients battling cancer and others with life-threatening illnesses or injuries. Platelets are the clotting portion of blood and are primarily given to cancer patients. Every 30 seconds, someone in the U.S. needs platelets, and over 1 million platelet transfusions are given to patients each year.

WHEN:           Friday, June 2, 7 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

WHERE:         Layton Blood Donation Center, 852 W. Hill Field Road, Suite B

WHO:              Layton Blood Donation Center’s first platelet donors and a Red Cross spokesperson will be available for interviews.

About the American Red Cross:

The American Red Cross shelters, feeds and provides emotional support to victims of disasters; supplies about 40 percent of the nation's blood; teaches skills that save lives; provides international humanitarian aid; and supports military members and their families. The Red Cross is a not-for-profit organization that depends on volunteers and the generosity of the American public to perform its mission. The following open letter was sent out to voters in Utah's Third Congressional District. It details Dr. Teng's decision to not appeal Judge Lawrence's denial of Teng's request to place his name on the candidate list.

Dear Friends,

I promised to keep you apprised about my attempt to restore our constitutional rights to equal protection under the law, in regards to private citizens in this state being allowed to remotely file a declaration of candidacy, just like incumbent politicians. Unfortunately, Friday morning my request to be immediately placed on the candidate list for your consideration was denied by a judge.

In explaining the denial, the judge surprisingly said that he could understand somebody like a Senator Hatch or Ambassador Huntsman being allowed to file remotely but private citizens do not need the same treatment. I strongly disagree. A government above the people is not a government of the people.

If I appeal the decision, I’m confident the Utah Supreme Court would take up the case and rule in my favor on the grounds that the Utah Constitution declares that all of us have the right to uniform operation of laws. Article 1, Section 24 states, “All laws of a general nature shall have uniform operation.” Clearly, a special law that gives politicians more flexibility in how they can file as candidates, but that burdens regular citizens, is not a law that is uniform in operation. All that being said, after much thought, I’ve decided to not appeal the denial for the following reasons:

  1. I do not want to delay the election. Had my request to be placed on the candidate list been immediately granted, I do not believe there would have been any delay in the election. However, if I were to appeal now and win, as I believe I would, the time elapsing between now and the appeal could result in a delayed election. This has never been my intention. I want the people of Utah’s 3rd Congressional District to be represented as soon as possible after Rep. Chaffetz vacates our seat.

  2. I want to save taxpayers money. The state has estimated that if the special election is delayed and to the point it cannot coincide with the municipal primary and general elections, it would mean another election would have to be held at a cost of two million dollars. I’d rather forego running for office than make the taxpayers foot the bill for another election.

  3. I’ve shed enough light on this unconstitutional statute that it is now on the Legislature’s radar. Without discounting the importance of judicial review, I generally prefer the people’s elected representatives fix bad laws. In fact, I’ve been informed that Rep. Craig Hall already has a bill open to address the issue.

For those of you who expressed gratitude and support for my efforts to restore our right to equal protection, thank you! I will continue to remain involved in our quest for smaller, smarter, constitutional government.

Yours truly,

Chia-Chi Teng
