Dear KidsOutAndAbout.com readers:

Have you heard that Schoolhouse Rock Live! Jr. will be playing soon at Kingsbury Hall? Whether you grew up loving Schoolhouse Rock or it's brand-new to you, your family will love this show!

Back in the early 1970s, a dad, David McCall, noticed how easy it was for his son to remember his favorite song lyrics even as he struggled to remember his multiplication tables. He got together with musicians, and together they made learning fun by setting basic concepts to contemporary music with fun animation. It was a raging success. More than 30 of these cartoon spots played on ABC during Saturday morning cartoons through the 1970s and into the mid-1980s. They were (continue to be, really) hugely popular, and they became a touchstone of American culture for a whole generation of kids and the reason why so many people of a certain age can still recite the Constitution's Preamble. (If you are too young to remember, click here for an example.)

Schoolhouse Rock Live! Jr. is a wonderful musical adaptation performed by an enthusiastic and cast of talented local young actors from University of Utah Youth Theatre. The show follows Tom, a school teacher nervous about his first day, and includes all the best songs from the original, including "Conjunction Junction," "I’m Just a Bill," and many more.

According to Penelope Caywood, the show's director, she's been amazed by how many Schoolhouse Rocks fans she's encountered as she prepares for the show, many of them even launching into song for her. It's that infectious. Caywood says,"Schoolhouse Rock Live! is a little campy, a wee bit corny, kinda patriotic, but definitely A LOT of fun! My hope is that it entertains and uplifts the spirits of all who get the chance to see it."

Big Data Analytics is increasingly becoming a trending practice that society is adopting, and Daniel Kunin, a scholar at Stanford University and the creator of the online platform, Seeing Theory, is using creative and innovative ways to teach statistics and probability relevant to a changing world.

In a recent interview with CMRubinWorld, Kunin discusses math education today and how he believes it can be improved in order to both foster curiosity and be more relevant now and going forward. He argues that math should also be taught the same way that other subjects are taught so that it’s not just about learning the technical details but also about learning how to appreciate the “beauty” of mathematics.

Kunin advocates for more focus in curriculum on relevant topics such as statistics, which he believes is vital for youth living in the digital age of big data. Learning more about the multidisciplinary field of statistics will better prepare students entering the employment market. Kunin tells C.M. Rubin, founder of The Global Search for Education, that while “calculus is one of the greatest achievements of mathematics,” it is no longer as helpful for students in terms of understanding their “digital world”.

Daniel Kunin is a masters student at Stanford University where he studies Computational and Mathematical Engineering, and is also the creator of the online platform, Seeing Theory.
