March 2nd is a big day in history! It’s Dr. Seuss’s birthday! It’s also when Lomond View Elementary has their reading celebration to remember this lively and creative fellow.
Librarian, Virginia Miller, who organized this much anticipated celebration chose the theme: “I Can Read with My Eyes Shut”. Prior to this day, every grade had the opportunity to come into the library and pick a silly set of paper glasses. They colored them in and drew in their own eyes and added personality to each set of eyeballs.
Miller says, “To learn you have to keep your eyes wide open!” And that is how the theme came about for Dr. Seuss’s birthday this year.
“It just never stops being exciting! Someone told me their child said that besides Christmas it’s the next best day,” Miller laughs.
With the excitement continuing to grow, more cakes than ever were entered into the contest. 64 to be exact!
“You think you’ve seen every green cake you possibly could but they change all the time!”
Yertle the Turtle won Grand Prize this year. And never before has there been a Yertle the Turtle cake at Lomond View. A new category was also given called “Exceptional Merit” due to the overflowing abundance of cakes!
Everyone receives a prize and all are winners!
Storytelling carried on throughout the day while Big Cat in the Hat and Little Cat in the Hat greeted students and teachers.
This is a day to remember at Lomond View! Most of all, a day for excitement to keep your eyes wide open and learn as you read!
