(Washington, D.C., March 20, 2018) – U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue issued the following statement regarding National Agriculture Day and President Donald J. Trump’s Proclamation recognizing the importance of America’s farmers, ranchers, foresters, and producers:

“For the past 45 years, National Ag Day has played a key role in helping people understand where their food and fiber comes from and how important agriculture is to our national economy,” said Secretary Perdue. “Our farmers, ranchers, foresters, and producers in America are feeding and clothing the world – and it’s important to never forget that. I am thrilled that we have a day, really a whole week, where we can celebrate the bounty of the American harvest.”

Councils of 10 Utah cities & counties will start the day with Hindu mantras in June

Hindu prayers will open the meetings of ten city and county councils in Utah between June four to seven, containing verses from world’s oldest existing scripture.

These include Weber County Board of Commissioners (Ogden), Wasatch County Council (Heber City), Juab County Commission (Nephi), Payson City Council, Centerville City Council, Heber City Council, Woods Cross City Council, Salem City Council, West Bountiful City Council and Charleston Town Board.

Hindu statesman Rajan Zed will deliver the invocations from ancient Sanskrit scriptures before these city and county councils. After Sanskrit delivery, he then will read the English interpretation of the prayers. Sanskrit is considered a sacred language in Hinduism and root language of Indo-European languages.

Zed, who is the President of Universal Society of Hinduism, will recite from Rig-Veda, the oldest scripture of the world still in common use; besides lines from Upanishads and Bhagavad-Gita (Song of the Lord), both ancient Hindu scriptures. He plans to start and end each prayer with “Om”, the mystical syllable containing the universe, which in Hinduism is used to introduce and conclude religious work.

Reciting from Brahadaranyakopanishad, Rajan Zed plans to say “Asato ma sad gamaya, Tamaso ma jyotir gamaya, Mrtyor mamrtam gamaya”; which he will then interpret as “Lead us from the unreal to the real, Lead us from darkness to light, and Lead us from death to immortality.” Reciting from Bhagavad-Gita, he proposes to urge councilmembers and others present to keep the welfare of others always in mind.

Zed will also meet Chair James H. “Jim” Harvey of Weber County Board of Commissioners, Chairman Clinton L. Painter of Juab County Commission, Mayor Rick Earnshaw of Woods Cross, Mayor Kurt L. Christensen of Salem and Mayor Brenda Kozlowski of Charleston before the respective invocations. During this Utah trip, Zed also plans to address students at Brigham Young University (Provo) and meet its Dean of Religious Education Dr. Brent L. Top; and address a gathering at Sri Ganesha Hindu Temple of Utah (South Jordan) and meet Utah Indian community leader Dinesh C. Patel and Temple President Satish K. Nachaegari.

Rajan Zed had opened Utah State Senate, Salt Lake County Council, Utah County Commission (Provo); and city councils of West Valley, Provo, Sandy, Layton, Taylorsville, South Jordan and Draper—all in Utah; with Hindu invocations in the past.

Zed, a global Hindu and interfaith leader, has been bestowed with World Interfaith Leader Award. Zed is Senior Fellow and Religious Advisor to Foundation for Religious Diplomacy, Spiritual Advisor to National Association of Interchurch & Interfaith Families, on the Advisory Board of The Interfaith Peace Project, etc. He has been panelist for “On Faith”, a prestigious interactive conversation on religion produced by The Washington Post; and leads a weekly interfaith panel “Faith Forum” in a Gannett publication for over seven years.

Hinduism, oldest and third largest religion of the world, has about 1.1 billion adherents and moksh (liberation) is its ultimate goal. There are about three million Hindus in USA.

Bugged By The Flu Or Other Ailments?

3 Ways Good Nutrition Protects and Heals

As another flu epidemic tears through the U.S., the nation appears almost defenseless.  From flu shots to healthy habits such as hand washing and covering the mouth when coughing, no remedy is infallible.

One of the best bets against getting the flu, experts say, is eating healthier. Good nutrition, according to the American Dietetic Association, can help you avoid the flu by boosting the body’s immune system.

Dr. Sanda Moldovan, author of HEAL UP!: How to Repair, Rebuild and Renew Naturally (www.beverlyhillsdentalhealth.com), says the benefits of proper nutrition extend from oral health to sickness prevention and post-surgery healing. As a periodontist and nutritionist, she sees problems taking root early on.

“Proper nutrition is a huge component of oral health and overall health,” says Moldovan, who has practices in Beverly Hills and Manhattan. ”Nutritional deficiencies manifest in the mouth. Redness at the corners of the mouth, a shiny, spotted or glossy tongue, burning mouth, bleeding gums, can all be signs of different vitamin and nutrient deficiencies.”

Moldovan notes that many medical journal articles have related nutritional deficiencies to numerous oral health problems and general health crises such as diabetes, high blood pressure, immune system issues, and even cancer. According to the Centers for Disease Control and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), over 50 percent of Americans are deficient in vitamins A, C and D and E, as well as in calcium and potassium.

“Unfortunately, most people do not get the nutrients needed from their food,” Moldovan says. ‘For example, vitamin D needs supplementation because we cannot get enough of it from food alone.  Research has shown that an optimum level of vitamin D, together with a healthy diet, is a key to staying healthy during this flu season.

“Good nutrition is so important in everyday life and in the healing process.  There are a number of ways for a person with sub-optimal health, or who is healing after surgery or injury, to improve their condition through better nutrition.”

Moldovan lists three ways to protect and heal the body with the right nutrition:

  • Antioxidants.  These combat the potential damage done by harmful cells. So try a wide variety of colorful fruits and vegetables, which contain potent antioxidants. ”Fresh fruits and vegetables are best because cooking destroys most antioxidants,” Moldovan says. “Basically, the more colorful the foods, the more antioxidants they have. Green, leafy vegetables also contain a healthy supply of minerals and chlorophyll, both of which aid in the rehabilitation process.”
  • Mix of proteins, fats. Diets low in protein and high in sugar and animal fat can increase inflammation, Moldovan says. ”But don’t eliminate fats completely from the diet,” she says. “You should include healthy fats such as in olives, flax seed, coconut oil, nuts and avocado.” Diets rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which are found in cold-water fish such as salmon and black cod, have been shown to decrease pain and inflammation. Diets too low in protein can deplete the immune system.
  • Acid-alkaline balance. “The best tool you have for daily living and healing is the way you eat,” Moldovan says. “For instance, a diet high in sugar is acidic, whereas incorporating alkalinizing foods, such as lemons, limes and dark leafy greens combat acidity. They’re also loaded with vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.”

“There’s no one-size fits-all nutritional advice anymore,” Moldovan says. “Each person has a different way of absorbing and processing vitamins and minerals. The

bottom line is that food is nourishment, and it’s vital we get what we need to stay

healthy, fight disease and to heal.”
