Classic Cars on a Classic Street - 17th Annual Historic 25th Street Car Show

June 7th – Ogden, Utah. Ogden Downtown Alliance presents the 17th Annual Historic 25th Street Car Show! From 5 pm to 9 pm, over 300 vehicles will be showcased along Historic 25th Street in Ogden from Wall Avenue to Washington Boulevard with live music, vendors, activities and more. Over 30 winners are selected every year by sponsors, local business owners and Ogden City officials!

It all started when Wasatch Rods & Customs Car Club held a “cruise night” where 60 vintage cars would cruise from Layton to Historic 25th Street in Ogden. Once they arrived, they would park along the historic street, enjoy a dinner out on the town and stroll the galleries. The club saw a potential for growth with cruise night, thus creating the Historic 25th Street Car Show. Three years ago, the club was ready to retire and asked the Ogden Downtown Alliance (ODA) to carry on the management and production of the event. 2019 will be the third year that the Historic 25th Street Car Show is being produced and managed by ODA.

While wanting to preserve the core of the famous show, ODA also recognized opportunities to improve public safety and coordination of the event as more vehicles continue to join year after year. “Change is hard,” said ODA Director Kim Bowsher, “and we’ve worked really hard to make changes to this event that allow us to ensure all registered vehicles are guaranteed a space and that there are still public access points for safety concerns. For so many years people could come down, pay their fee and park wherever, but with the growth of the event comes a need to adjust the process.”

Two years ago, ODA implemented an online registration option which allowed people to pre-register. Last year, ODA worked with Ogden Police and City Administration to revise the entry point for vehicles. “It was really hard,” Bowsher said, “we tried to get information out to people about timing for vehicle entry, access points, and reduce the number of onsite registrations – the street just gets too full for it to be safe.” This year there is no onsite registration and ODA is happy with their preregistration so far, “we have a full street of cars ready and we’re really excited to be on to this next phase for the Historic 25th Street Car Show.”

Highlights of the event this year include Endless Indulgence Retro Wear’s Annual Fashion Show and live music performances by Caleb & The Canvas, Nuthin’ Special and headliner, Sammy Brue and The Grinders. Historic 25th Street Car Show serves as a platform for Lantern House’s annual fundraiser - be sure to stop by their booth at the main stage on Lincoln Avenue for information on their opportunity drawing and ways to support.

Nick VanArsdell, owner of Lucky Slice Pizza, says “We’ve been on Historic 25th Street for seven years and it’s our busiest Friday night. It’s a good opportunity to bring people from all over the Wasatch Front together.” Nick shared that he believes the Historic 25th Street Car Show is the perfect kick off to summer events in Downtown Ogden.

Coinciding with the First Friday Art Stroll, Historic 25th Street Car Show is a great time to enjoy a night in Downtown Ogden. Come prepared to shop, dine and stroll the galleries! Local shops, eateries and galleries will extend their hours with specials and local artisan displays. Participants can dine in any of the more than fifteen restaurants located on Historic 25th Street or enjoy the First Friday Art Stroll Food Truck Rally held at Ogden Union Station. New this year, the inaugural Ogden UnCon will be sharing the weekend so attendees can expect to see lots of fun costumes and people roaming about.

·         World MS Day (May 30) is all about raising awareness for multiple sclerosis because unless you have a personal connection to MS, the average person doesn’t know all that much about what MS is

·         For those unfamiliar, multiple sclerosis is an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system that disrupts the flow of information within the brain, and between the brain and body. No two people will experience exactly the same symptoms, and each person’s symptoms can change or fluctuate over time

·         Symptoms vary from person to person and range from numbness or tingling, to walking difficulties, fatigue, dizziness, pain, depression, blindness and paralysis.

·         A recent study funded by the National MS Society confirms that there are nearly 1 million people living with MS in the U.S., which is more than twice as many people as previously estimated

·         Now that we know there are twice as many people living with MS, the MS Society is working to raise more money and awareness to help support twice as many people

·         Most people with MS are diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 50

  • Women are two to three times more likely to have MS than men.
    • 74% of those living with MS are women, as compared to only 26% men
  • MS more common in the Northeast than any other region in the United States
  • People living in the nine U.S. states comprising the Northeast — Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Vermont — had the highest rates of MS
  • Researchers have found a correlation with MS prevalence and distance from the Equator
  • Here’s a link to a Dropbox with infographics with this data

·         If people want to get involved, the National MS Society hosts events all around the country including Walk MS (1-5 miles), Bike MS (25-150 miles), Challenge Walk MS (50 miles in 3 days) to bring a community of hope together to raise awareness and funds for research

·         OR you can even support MS when you shop, using platforms like AmazonSmile that donates .05% of cart to a charity of your choice. Just login and select the National MS Society to support MS year-round!

  • Any funds donated to the National MS Society help fund cutting-edge research, drive change through advocacy, facilitate professional education, and provide programs and services to help people with MS move their lives forward.
    • The first medication to treat MS was not introduced until 1993. But thanks to research, there are now over 16 different medications available, including oral medications released in 2010

·         The National MS Society also offers services for people living with MS like our MS Navigator program. You can call 1-800-344-4867 for support with everything from emotional support resources, navigating insurance, researching medications, and more

·         For more information about MS and how you can get involved, visit nationalMSsociety.org or connect via social on Instagram, YouTube, Facebook or Twitter

UT Creative Industry Jobs grew 11% in 2018, 3rd Fastest in Country

Salt Lake City, UT - The health, vibrancy, quality, and diversity of Utah’s cultural community is leading the nation in cultural growth and participation. Utah is the third fastest growing state for arts and culture and is #1 in live arts participation per capita. The cultural sector collectively employs just under 112 thousand Utans a year while generating $4 billion in earnings, according to data compiled in Utah Cultural Alliance’s just published 2018 State of UT Culture report

“It’s because we have this history of hard work and love of the arts and humanities that the cultural sector has an impact in Utah. People recognize the immense benefits of cultural participation and they are willing to work to make it happen.” - Crystal Young-Otterstrom (Executive Director of Utah Cultural Alliance)

Cultural treasures like the Moab Music Festival, Escalante Canyons Art Festival, and the Sundance Film Festival not only enhance tourist experiences while in the state but bring national and international visitors. The Sundance Film Festival in 2018 had 1,000 international visitors, and 45,000 out of state visitors. 20% of attendees had never been to Utah before. Utah also hosts the prestigious Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition every two years.

“Cultural Tourism protects natural and cultural resources, which improve the quality of life for residents and travelers who participate in the services and attractions of our local destination.” - Scott Beck (CEO of Visit Salt Lake), a quote from the report.

The Utah Cultural Alliance will publicly release its 2018 State of Utah Culture report on June 20th. A facebook live event will walk viewers through the report and the impact the cultural sector has on Utah’s Economy highlighting data such as; Utah County has 24,204 creative occupations and brings in $1.2 billion in creative industry earnings and Sanpete County brings 14.8 million in creative industry sales while business consider a vibrant cultural environment the #1 most important factor when moving or expanding in SLC.

The report also highlights data revealing the impact of arts and humanities on education, quality of life and health. Studies at the University of Utah have found that for Alzheimer patients, music activated the brain in a way that caused communication across regions. They are looking at music as a therapy treatment to increase the quality of life for patients and their family.

“We are so excited to share data that reinforces what most people in Utah already believe. The arts and humanities impact us on all levels and it’s gratifying to see that reflected in the numbers.” Kylie Howard (report writer)

First Event of USU’s Lyric 2019 Season

LOGAN, UTAH, May 30, 2019 ---- Utah State University’s Lyric Meet-n-Greet is Tuesday, June 4, at 6 p.m. Attendees will meet at the Morgan Theatre in the Chase Fine Arts Center on the USU campus and head outside to the Ron & Janet Jibson Family Courtyard for a barbecue with company members. After dinner, there will be guided tours of the Morgan Theatre, Black Box Theatre, rehearsal spaces and the Sid G. Perkes Theatrical Design Complex, which includes the costume, scene, prop and paint shops.

“The Meet-n-Greet is a more casual way for our patrons to be introduced to the whole company,” Richie Call, artistic director of the Lyric, said. “A lot of our patrons have previously toured the Caine Lyric Theatre, but this is the first chance for them to see a behind-the-scenes look at the work spaces we use and the two additional venues we’re adding this season.”

Call said that the tours will be conducted by several members of the administrative and design teams.

“One of the advantages to having the Meet-n-Greet at the beginning of the season is that the company will be here in its entirety,” Call said. “Sometimes directors or designers have to leave once their show is open and our patrons don’t normally have the opportunity to interact with them.”

Newly appointed associate artistic director, Jason Spelbring, added that he is excited to show Lyric patrons around the spaces where the company spends so much time preparing for shows.

“On a personal note, I’m looking forward to connecting with patrons that I haven’t yet had an opportunity to meet,” Spelbring said.

he Lyric 2019 season includes A Raisin in the Sun, Mamma Mia!, Clybourne Park, Murder for Two, The Great Society (Staged Reading) and Size Matters and runs June 14-August 3.

For more information or to purchase tickets for the 2019 season, go online to lyricrep.org. Visit the Caine Lyric Theatre Box Office at 28 W. Center Street on Mon.-Sat. from 10 a.m.-5 p.m until August 3 or the Spectrum Box Office at 7600 Old Main Hill on Mon.-Fri. from 10 a.m.-5 p.m.
