Almost Ready for the Kids
On a beautiful morning in June you wouldn’t expect to see upwards of 50 volunteers, along with Pleasant View City workers, council members, and the mayor at the park. But that was the scene on June 15th. The occasion was the assembly of the new play ground at Pleasant View Park. Local religious groups were asked to pitch in and everyone was welcome. All were split it into teams and given an assigned part of the equipment. After just an hour, the general shape was discernible. Within two hours some of the younger volunteers couldn’t help themselves from climbing on what was already standing. By noon, most of the structure was in place.
Those working on the project were kept refreshed by beverages supplied by Admiral Beverage and the City provided a hot dog and chips lunch for all that were there. Over the next couple of weeks the City workers and representatives from the manufacturer have put on the finishing touches and poured the concrete footings. Last to go in will be the bark chips and possibly a ribbon cutting. The City has invested around $140,000 into the new area. Now it will be up to the residents to take good care of it and keep it nice for many years to come.
Changes, Changes and More Zoning Changes
The latest zoning changes proposed in Pleasant View is located at the intersection of 1325 West and Highway 89. The current zoning only allows for commercial development. The current owner of the land has applied for a change to include a mixed use designation. His intent is to develop the land and build townhomes on the property.
Even with the six-foot privacy wall that separates the property in question and Jacob’s Mill subdivision, the current residents have some concerns with the proposed development. One of the biggest concerns expressed is that while the developer promises a certain standard for construction and finish, that does not guarantee what it will look like in ten or twenty years.
The current status of the proposal is with the planning commission and if approved, it moves on to the City Council for approval.
The station at Pleasant View is moving along with the improvements to Highway 89 almost complete. The plumbing and sewer are in place along with the storm drains. The roads will be next to go in and that will be followed by the footings and foundations. It could be possible to see the first tenets moving in by late summer or early fall.
Pay Raises and Contract Extensions
At the City Council meeting on June 11th, a pay raise from $78,000 to $84,000 a year and a contract extension for the current city manager was passed with a four to one vote. There are some that are asking what has the city manager has done to warrant a 10% increase. Comment from the City office was that there are other cities of similar size in the area that are paying this rate. Residents inquired if the performance warranted the increase. The one dissenting vote came from Councilman Mileski. It was odd that the discussion prior to the vote did not include the pay increase of over 10%, almost as to not bring attention to it. Is Pleasant View getting their money’s worth?
Putting Their Hat in the Ring
As of June 20th there are two candidates for Mayor in Pleasant View. Mayor Clifford would like another term and Councilman Mileski would like the opportunity to keep Pleasant View moving forward. Look for more information in the next edition.
