Updates from Utah Gov - Organizations

Thursday, August 11, 2016 - 10:00am

Since the launch of Pokemon Go just a few short weeks ago, the mobile app has taken the world by storm. We wanted to understand more about this phenomenon, specifically in the U.S., so we turned to the data to see if we could make sense of why Pokemon Go has become an overnight sensation.

We used Google Trends to focus on the top 10 states most interested in Pokemon Go, and looked at the amount of millennials,  the obesity rate, and physical activity levels in each state.  Our research found that active states in the West love Pokemon Go, which wasn’t surprising, but we also discovered that less active states in the South loved it, too. Who knew West Virginia, the fourth least active state in the country, loves to chase monsters while playing Pokemon Go? And of course, the ever trendy and hip state with the most millennials, Oregon, is officially obsessed with Pokemon Go.

Scroll through the info-graphic below to see more information on which states are the most Pokemon-obsessed.

IRS Office in Ogden Offers Service by Appointment

PHOENIX - - Taxpayers in need of service at the Ogden, Utah IRS Taxpayer Assistance Center (TAC) will need to call to schedule an appointment. However, they should first see if their answer is available at IRS.gov. They may be able to resolve their tax question by visiting the IRS website, eliminating the need to be seen at a local TAC.

The IRS will begin taking calls on Monday, Aug. 8, for appointments starting Monday, Aug. 15, or later. Taxpayers requiring assistance should first call the special toll-free number, 1-844-545-5640, to schedule an appointment at Ogden, Utah TAC, located at 324 25th Street in the James V. Hansen federal Building.   IRS representatives can help resolve their issue over the phone or schedule an appointment at a local IRS TAC if face-to-face service is needed. In most cases, callers are able to resolve their tax issue without having to travel to a TAC, which can sometimes be a significant trip. Taxpayers should always check IRS.gov for days and hours of service as well as services offered at the location they plan to visit.

The IRS is moving to an appointment service at this office as part of an ongoing effort to eliminate lines and reduce frustration for taxpayers with more complex tax matters who require in-person tax help. Prior studies show that many taxpayers visit an IRS office to get a tax transcript, make a payment, resolve a notice, obtain a form or publication or ask about their refund. Many of these issues can be resolved at IRS.gov without traveling to an IRS office.

As a reminder, IRS.gov offers numerous online options for tax help that can save time and effort. Services include:

·         Where’s My Refund?, people can check their refund status and estimated delivery date

Register for the 5K Color Run – Click HERE

North Ogden City and JUST-a-BREAK.org have teamed up to bring an incredible two-day event to North Ogden. CHALK IT UP NORTH is a chalk art festival that will include a chalk art competition featuring renowned artists from all over the state, a 5K color run, a car show, local vendors, food trucks, live entertainment and more!

The event is planned for Friday and Saturday, August 26th and 27th, 2016. All proceeds of the event will benefit the JUST-a-BREAK foundation – a non-profit 501 c-3 organization that gives relief to Utah cancer patients and their families, founded by local North Ogden resident Greg Thorpe after losing his young wife Jennifer Thorpe to cancer last year.

The JUST-a-BREAK foundation was formed after Greg while caring for his wife Jen, a stage IV colon cancer patient, realized how difficult the journey was not only for the patient but also for the caregiver and entire family. He felt the toll it took on them financially and emotionally. His passion and desire to help and serve others led him to the idea of having the local community come together and help give JUST-a-BREAK from cancer packages to those with advanced stage cancer. JUST-a-BREAK care packages vary, but can include gift certificates to restaurants, movies, hotel stays and other various family excursions around the state. Greg hopes it will give the cancer patient and their family a taste of normal life again, a brief “break” from cancer. He knows personally how much this small break can mean to someone whose life is consumed with hospitals, doctors and treatments.

For more information on the CHALK IT UP NORTH chalk art festival, or the JUST-a-BREAK foundation, please call Greg Thorpe at 801-710-0693.
