Capitol Preservation Board Announces Capitol Centennial Celebration
SALT LAKE CITY— The Utah State Capitol is turning 100-years-old! To celebrate, the Capitol Preservation Board will host a weeklong celebration at the Capitol building. All events are free and open to the public.
From Monday Oct. 3 – Fri., Oct. 7, the capitol will be bustling with open house tours. From 9 a.m. – 8 p.m. docents will be stationed at six tour stops, including the Supreme Court Chamber, the House of Representatives Chamber, the Senate Chamber, the Rotunda, the Governor’s Office and the State Reception Room.
Daily performances will be held in the Rotunda featuring Utah student groups and multicultural community groups celebrating Utah over the past 100 years.
Children from around Utah will have their artwork displayed on the 1st floor of the Capitol throughout the week. Art pieces feature the capitol building and its architectural details, events from Utah history and Utah symbols.
On Saturday Oct. 8 from 1 p.m. – 4 p.m, children and families are invited to gather for Capitol Discovery Day, where they will be able to participate in hands-on activities including geodesic dome building, copper etching, an earthquake demonstration and different coloring activities. These activities will educate about the capitol, capitol art, architecture and Utah history. Open house tours will also be available during this time.
To close the celebration week, Governor Gary R. Herbert will host the “Commemorating a Century” Gala in the Rotunda on Saturday at 6 p.m. The gala will feature speeches and community performances honoring the building and Utah’s history. At 7:30 p.m. a ballroom performance will kick off a dance for all to enjoy. Dress for this event is business and/or period style dress.
