Congressman Rob Bishop Insists He Knows More Than Military Experts, Senator John McCain When It Comes to Defense Funding and Sage-Grouse

DENVER—Utah Representative Rob Bishop is so desperate to undermine common-sense protections for the greater sage-grouse that he’s arguing against military leaders and insulting Republican Senator John McCain by insisting McCain “doesn’t understand” the Department of Defense’s needs.

Rep. Bishop is determined to add a “policy rider” to the must-pass National Defense Authorization Act to block collaborative conservation plans that protect the greater sage-grouse. The sage-grouse plans are an unprecedented bipartisan effort that brought together scientists, ranchers, governors, and many other stakeholders to avoid a listing under the Endangered Species Act.

Senator John McCain, chairman of the Armed Services Committee, has resisted Rep. Bishop’s heavy-handed attempts to attach his pet projects to the NDAA. Sen. McCain is heeding the word from military experts with the Department of Defense who have made it clear that greater sage-grouse conservation plans do not negatively impact the United States military.

Nonetheless, in an interview with E&E News this week, Rep. Bishop, who has no military experience, insisted that Sen. McCain just “doesn’t understand the issue,” and continued to argue that undermining conservation protections for U.S. public lands is pertinent to national security.

The Center for Western Priorities issued the following statement from Executive Director Jennifer Rokala:

“Sage-grouse conservation is a win for collaborative conservation, protecting the multiple uses of U.S. public lands, from energy development to outdoor recreation. But instead of listening to military experts and scientists, Congressman Bishop is once again letting his decisions be guided by his deep-seated animosity towards America’s public lands and wildlife.”
