President Trump claims he's preparing an executive order on drug prices.

"We're working on a favored nations clause, where we pay whatever the lowest nation's price is," remarked the president. "Why should other nations — like Canada — why should other nations pay less than us?"

The president's proposal might seem appealing, but it's really just another excuse to enact government price controls.

Price controls are the wrong approach; they will stunt drug innovation and restrict patient access to new cures.

President Trump promised "America will never be a socialist country" -- at least not while he's in office. 

But some members of his administration didn't get the memo. The Department of Health and Human Services still plans to impose socialist, European-style price controls on advanced drugs administered through Medicare.

The proposal would tie Medicare's drug reimbursement rates to the average prices paid by governments that impose price controls on medicines. Officials hope their scheme will reduce pharmaceutical spending in America.

Congress will soon consider the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement. When U.S. government officials negotiated the deal, they asked their Mexican and Canadian counterparts to lift their nations’ intellectual property standards for certain advanced drugs.

But some U.S. lawmakers are taking issue with this provision, claiming it will adversely impact U.S. drug prices. They’re wrong. USMCA will catalyze investment in medical research without affecting prices. If Congress wants to help patients, they’ll pass the trade deal as signed by the three countries.
