DWR News Release:

Despite harsh winter, deer survival is good statewide

 

SALT LAKE CITY — While winters with heavy snow can be hard on deer and other big game animals, Utah Division of Wildlife Resources biologists said that adult deer survival is currently at 92% statewide.

    Sometimes, during my drive to work, I listen to Clarence Maurice Mitchell IV, host of the Baltimore's WBAL C4 radio show. Mitchell was formerly a member of Maryland's House of Delegates and its Senate. In recent weeks, Mitchell has been talking about the terrible crime situation in Baltimore. In 2018, there were 308 homicides. So far this year, there have been 69. That's in a 2018 population of 611,648 -- down from nearly a million in 1950. The city is pinning its hopes to reduce homicides and other crime on new Police Commissioner Michael Harrison.

Steamboat

 

You know this horse.  He’s the bucking bronc you see immortalized on the Wyoming state license plate giving that cowboy rider a hard time.  The cowboy is believed to be Clayton Danks who rode Steamboat in the Cheyenne Frontier Days rodeo in 1909.  He’s one of many to take that fearsome ride.  The odds are he was thrown down fast and hard and lucky if he wasn’t seriously injured.  He’d never forget that rough ride or the name ‘Steamboat’.

SALT LAKE CITY — Utah Division of Wildlife Resources biologists have released their recommendations for the 2019 big game hunts and are asking for the public’s feedback.

DWR big game coordinator Covy Jones said that the recommended number of hunting permits each year is based on a few factors.
