2-13-2019 Marijuana, Mental Illness and ViolenceMarijuana, Mental Illness and Violence

Ten states and Washington, D.C., have legalized the recreational use of marijuana. Twenty-two other states, along with U.S. territories Puerto Rico and Guam, allow marijuana to be used for medical purposes. Let's examine some hidden issues about marijuana use. Before we start, permit me to state my values about medical or recreational use of any drug. We each own ourselves. If we choose to take chances with substances that can ruin our health, lead to death and otherwise destroy our own lives, that's our right.

What energy has to do with national security

This year, U.S. District Judge Richard Gergel barred the Interior Department from moving forward with its offshore drilling plans during the federal government shutdown. According to his injunction, the department is prohibited  “from taking action to promulgate permits ... or take any other official action regarding the pending permit applications for oil and gas surveys in the Atlantic.”

Hopefully, the ban will be lifted now that the shutdown is over. Right now, nearly 94 percent of offshore territories are off-limits to energy explorers.

Trump's maritime fuel policy will sink energy markets

The Trump administration is working to slow down the implementation of a major international environmental regulation that's set to take effect in 2020. The administration hopes that the effort will ease the compliance burden on businesses by phasing in the rules gradually, rather than all at once.

Counterintuitively, phasing in the regulation could raise costs on American consumers, rather than reduce costs as the administration intends. It's smarter to let the rules go into effect as scheduled.

President Trump and every declared candidate for the Presidency want to lower drug costs. And, surprise, it's the President who has made a bold move towards a workable free market solution.

His new proposal cracks down on the price-gouging practices of middlemen in the drug supply chain -- Prescription Benefit Managers, the mega-corporations that insurers employ to administer their drug benefits.

The FDA's Assault on Tobacco Consumers

HHS Secretary Azar's drug price plan is a gift to global "freeloaders"

Prescription drugs are costly in the United States. In an effort to lower the prices Americans pay at the pharmacy, President Trump pledged to end "the global freeloading that forces American consumers to subsidize lower prices in foreign countries."

Unfortunately, a new plan from the Department of Health and Human Services undermines this goal.

2-11-2019 - Economic prosperity or a clean environment? Why not both?

In the recent midterms, voters across the country rejected ballot initiatives that would have imposed punishing restrictions on oil and natural gas producers.

Washingtonians squashed a proposed carbon tax. Coloradans voted down a de facto ban on fracking throughout most of the state. And Arizonans rejected a proposition that would have mandated huge increases in renewable energy production.
