5*26*2018 - Dave Says

Dear Dave,

My wife and I want to begin teaching our son how make a budget and live on one. He’s 16, and he has a part-time job and a hand-me-down car. Is this a realistic idea?

Mike

Dear Mike,

Your son is at a great point in life to learn how to make money behave. Even in his situation, when he’s still living at home, there are plenty of things he can include in a budget. There’s gas for his car, along with maintenance and insurance. He’ll need to save a little money — maybe even for college — and I’m sure he’ll want some spending cash, too.

Book Review: So Far from the Bamboo Grove

So Far from the Bamboo Grove is a book I read and loved as a youth. I decided to revisit the story and read through its pages once more—after all, it has been at least 30 years since I picked it up last. I knew it had a powerful story about a little girl, but I had forgotten the details.

Yoko Kawashima Watkins tells the true, incredible story of the horrific yet humbling events she and her family faced.

What Does A Republic Look Like?

Most people ignorantly refer to our political system as a democracy although this word is not in the Declaration of Independence, U.S. Constitution, Bill of Rights, or any document given to us by our Founding Fathers.  Our Pledge of Allegiance to the flag identifies our form of government as a republic.
