Red Cross calls for healthy donors to maintain blood supply

(Nov. 18, 2018) — As influenza activity picks up, the American Red Cross is urging healthy donors of all blood types to give blood or platelets to ensure a strong blood supply for patients in need.

October 21-27 is National Retirement Security Week, and I’m excited that people are waking up to the importance of planning for the future. They know the actions they take now will make or break the golden years.

Let’s be honest, though. Building wealth takes time. It’s easy to get distracted by short-term wants, like that fancy new car or fantasy vacation. So how, exactly, do you stay focused on a long-term goal like retirement? Here’s an illustration that might help.

In one fell swoop, incumbent members of Congress could save consumers money, drive down healthcare costs, and burnish their bipartisan credentials before the midterm elections.

How? By scrapping a provision within Obamacare that prohibits 3 million people from opening health savings accounts, which can save patients hundreds or even thousands of dollars a year.

Expanding access to HSAs should be one of Congress's top priorities.

In a recent column “Billionaires Battle to Get Your Vote” LibertyUnderFire documented leading funders for the right side of the political spectrum in the 2016 election as the Koch brothers, Charles and David.  Those on the left side of the political spectrum were David Rockefeller (recently deceased) and George Soros.  A new billionaire, Tom Steyer, has emerged outpacing both the right and the left in funding elections. But influence from the wealthy is nothing new.

   Democratic socialist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, seeking to represent New York's 14th Congressional District, has called for the abolition of the Electoral College. Her argument came on the heels of the Senate's confirming Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court. She was lamenting the fact that Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Samuel Alito, nominated by George W. Bush, and Justices Neil Gorsuch and Kavanaugh, nominated by Donald Trump, were court appointments made by presidents who lost the popular vote but won the Electoral College vote.

Fall has arrived, which means it's time for flannels, football, and finding the perfect health insurance plan.

That's right -- nestled amidst all the seasonal festivities is Medicare's open enrollment season, which kicks off October 15. Seniors will have until December 7 to select their Medicare plans for the coming year. 

Seniors have a cornucopia of coverage options to choose from. In particular, they should be thankful for the Medicare Part D prescription drug program, which enables tens of millions of seniors to afford their medications.

What do I think? I think your co-worker is broke. Taking financial advice from broke people is like taking dieting advice from fat people. In other words, it’s dumb.
